I wanted it to be a quick kill, so I aimed for the neck and took the shot at 30 feet. The bird was hit but ran off making loud noises as only a chicken would. It went into the thick woods that I couldn't follow. Boy, what a waste that was. Ever since that, I shoot the bird with body shots which are more effective. Has anybody else experienced this? I wish I could have recovered the chicken. The woods here are full of brambles that it'll just tear up my clothes going in there. My logic about aiming for the neck was that I did a test on a raw turkey neck (from the Thanksgiving bird) before this with my HW77 in .177. The pellet will just bust the neck as it goes through it. I thought the bird wouldn't survive a hit like that. Maybe I just grazed the bird, who knows? I no longer have access to that area with all the wild chickens, so I put this question out to you guys who do have chickens running around your place. Body shots on the chickens with a .22 rimfire is a sure kill. It runs down the back of the neck. That's why you can cut off the head with an axe and it will still run around until it bleeds out. No joke.
