I made the mistake of leaving my garage open w/the ladder to the attic down on several occasions and believe this led to some squirrels taking up residence above my garage. I keep a lot of computer gear/parts along w/my antique computer game boxes (original Kings Quest I for Apple II, Wolfenstein, etc.). So, needless to say I don't want rodents up chewing on things. I'm not sure how they're getting in/out now since I put the ladder up, but I'm trying to rid myself of the guys one-by-one.
One of 'em had the misfortune of giving a great profile from 35y and this was the result.
RWS 350 .22 w/JSB Jumbo Exact Heavy...
You can see the perfect .22 sized hole right below the left ear...needless to say it was a kill-shot.
And for those of you w/bad eyesight; I'm pointing w/a stick (been too long since I prodded dead animals w/sticks  )
Now, I was 35y away and I think it looks like a pretty sweet POI. However, the precision was mostly luck; the squirrel was on a tree facing vertically down. This is the best possible position in my opinion, b/c my windage is almost never off (giving me a nice large margin of error for elevation)...given my rifle was sighted in @ 20y I just aimed high and happened to smack him right below the ear.
I have vowed to my wife that I will not kill anything I won't eat. However, I have heard that during warmer temps squirrels are much more likely to carry a disease that can pass to humans via consumption...any thoughts on this? |

You will be just fine,as long as you don't consume the brain..."Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease".... some people consider it a delicacy.....not me.As long as your meat is thoroughly cooked,no worries.However it's good practice to make sure it doesn't have a sores,infections,or growths etc.If it does chuck it.

Thanks for the comments Mark.
I thought you could kill squirrels if they are damaging property out of season...I'm guessing that is not the case? I realize you posted that link b/c of the brain disease issue, but noticed the bit about the granny breaking the law... |

Thanks fritz, I was a bit surprised when I found where the pellet ended up.
I want to stay legal but honestly find it very hard to find out exactly what the laws are. Does the local police dept usually have that info handy? I just have a feeling if I go in asking if I can kill pesky squirrels they'd look at me like I'm a dumbshit. |

I would think that LE wouldn't really be too concerned with the squirrel,but more concerned with the location it would take place..inside city limits etc.I've dealt with pest issues before,and frankly it's about which officer you talk to.In my experience a seasoned officer is generally more understanding of that type of situation.Some frown on it..others...if they don't see it, it didn't happen.As they say if the a tree falls in the forest,and nobody is around to hear it,did it actually make a sound?...... Still I would check though,as my situation was different...Possum/Skunks etc.......  |

| In my town a slingshot is a firearm. Any projectile device is a firearm. I'm just glad I've got good neighbors who are tired of the bird feeders being raided by squirrels and starlings. My robin and cardinal population has went up exponentially since I started killing these pests. |
