I went squirrel hunting about a month ago with crow mags and my RWS 350 .22. I got a squirrel from about 30yards away (first squirrel I've killed/cleaned Smile). I missed my intended POI (head) and hit the little guy right in the upper spine. It didn't kill him so had to do a follow-up. I figured he must've been paralyzed given how much most squirrels flop if you don't get an insta-kill shot, but he did a backflip when I did the follow-up in the head. When I finished cleaning him I went to dig the pellet out and found that the Crow Mag penetrated the hide, but overall penetration was much less than I had expected(fully buried, but not by much...embedded in spine). See pics below...

As you can see the pellet didn't really expand at all. I think the side that is splayed hit the spine bones and broke off like that.

To give a reference of where the pellet entered (note that hole is bigger b/c I cut the pellet out).

My question is that given birds have no hide to speak of, the crow mags (or other hollow points) do really well and expand nicely. But, I'm wondering if anything w/a hide would do better w/a domed pellet for better penetration. I have a feeling he might've been dead in one shot had the pellet penetrated further.

im not 100 percent sure but i believe that domed pellets carry energy much farther not saying that 30 yards is far but at the range domed prob would of been better

predators. Twisted Evil crow mags need to go faster to expand.
you're maybe at 600 fps at 30 yards.

What he said Crow mags are great for the rats though....very satisfying "THWACK".Especially good for those situations where over penetration can damage property etc. Wink

I rarely get a shot at a squirrels at less than 25 yards, so I suppose I need to switch pellets.

Find what's accurate, and preferably accurate and cheap. CPH work for me, so do RWS superdomes. The CPH are a very hard alloy that does not deform much at all, making the hollowpoint useless. Still inexpensive and accurate.

Never had a squirrel walk a .22 CPH off... Never had a squirrel walk off a .17 Superdome either (of course, when both are properly placed). Those spine shots are my preferred target zone, but you hit too far back. It needs to be up near the head (effectively a headshot). (On headshots- remember that different parts of the brain control different things) To contradict myself, ever so slightly, with a .22 hole in it's head, you can't miss much.

try this. take a crow mag, press the hollowpoint side against yer
finger. does it hurt?

do the same with a predator. does it hurt?

The preds hurt more! I have about 12 different pellet types and have tested about 5 at distance to know that the crow mags are decently accurate...the preds are one I have not tested yet but if they are accurate to 40y then they'll be a keeper no doubt.

i've killed 2 dozen or so rats with crowmags at 830+ fps in .22
(mrod) and never found one. Shocked they just go flying.

the only one i ever got in .22 that never twitched was a pred
with my b-26 at a modest 630 fps. they penetrate before they
expand. Twisted Evil it still went through. Twisted Evil
