We have 55 kids so far, and from past experience can expect another couple dozen on the first night of class. The high point of the evening was a mother registering her 12 year-old son. In addition to the mandatory .22LR course, we also have stations for tree stand, duck boat, pistol, trap, blackpowder, centerfire rifle, and airgun. Maybe we should also cover blowgun, atlatl, etc. I hope this lady attends some of the classes, instead of just dumping the kid out of the car. After working my way all the way up through all the ranks in scouting, finally making my eagle, I then stayed on as one of the assistant scout masters. Comes one weekly meeting I was teaching a new class of scouts ths basics of first aid, and one young boy started cussing at other boys. Then when I repremanded him, he had a few words for me too. So I made the boy do 20 push-ups for his behavior. The following week his father shows up and threatens to "teach me a thing or two" if I ever do such a thing again. Mind you, this is the same father that never came to meetings, never went on camping trips, never attended award meetings. Basically we'd become nothing more then glorified baby sitters. Same thing can be said about parents that don't pay attention to thier childrens grades and such in school, then wonder why they can't read when they graduate highschool. In the familiar "ten commandments of firearm safety" #8 says: "Never shoot a bullet at a flat, hard surface or water." To that I would add not shooting at rubber tires or other resilient objects with an airgun. She'll tell. As regards "babysitting," we're maybe in a different position than Scout leaders, hockey coaches, etc. Minnesota requires that anyone born after 1979 must have the certificate to hunt, and hunting is a big part of Minnesota culture. If you're not mature enough to study the material or behave in class, then no way are you mature enough to carry a gun. Generally, the kids understand that. Not that we're ogres. The certificate is only a requirement for persons seeking a hunting license. On the other hand, the course is open to anyone, hunter or not. Like the babysitter that just wanted to know how to safely handle a gun should a toddler get into their parents' closet and find one. Or the non-shooting/non-hunting parents that take the course with their children so they can reinforce the message at home. People born before 1979 will also take the course - they're legal in Minnesota without it, but other states will usually require it for a non-resident hunting license. Afterwards they have to take the course, but the field exercise is waived (so they can do it entirely online). I was in the same boat with my ex. She absolutely would go off if I took him hunting. Course that never stopped me from doing it. He would call me crying because she was passed out drunk and he didn't have anybody else to talk to. He's really grown up to be an outstanding adult.
