fur,
Again, don't fall for the feet per second bs. It's a matter of feet pounds of energy (on target), that will get you game.
For your price range of less then $300, I would still adimently recommend the benjamin discovery. Either in .177 or .22. Both will get you squirrels and rabbits. The .22, within range will get slightly bigger game. Modifed to .25cal even bigger. With more stopping power. |

Don,
Sorry, guess I was reading too fast, you didn't mention which model. My bad! |
No problem as in another post I did call the Disco a pump by mistake when I knew it wasn't because I meant the 397. I was corrected and fixed my post. We all make mistakes so it is good to have one an other watching out for mistakes so newbies don't get bad info. |

No books that I know of, alot of the modifications and tuning, you can read about in these forums. To really get an idea on what what your pellets are doing at range, you need to invest in a chronograph.
That's not to say that you NEED one, in order to hunt with. There's plenty of good ag's that don't need any mods or tunes and are good to go right out of the box.
I can only related to those ag's that I have had experience with, that being my 1077, 2300 and now my discovery. Other's can give advice on what they've used. |

this thread is a little scattered IMO. a medium springer in either caliber -13-16 fpe will get you squirrel out to 40-50 yards-max. (.177/.22)
a magnum springer will get you another 20 yards.
the higher power you get in a springer the heavier the recoil-
the harder it will be on a scope. plus the guns are HUGE.
springers in either power range can be had under $300.
i have several guns in both calibers but am partial to .22.
a pumper such as the benji 392 is $150 and around 14 fpe. that is
a lot of pumping. co2 is only for birds(unless it's power modded)
you can jump into pcp which-there is a lot to know and you will need
a good amount of $$$$$.
my advice is to buy a good springer in .22 with a good scope.
you want one that will throw a 14.3 grain pellet in the high 600'sfps.
this will mean a rifle advetised at over 800fps
the ad is always minimum 100 fps higher.
i have chrony'd every airgun i own.
so, which ones are you looking at? |

i have a gamo 440 .177
a b-26 .22
a tech forcre 89 .22
a storm xt. .177
what scopes are you using?
which guns do you have?
i took the factory scope off my storm (which i bought used)
but it on my b-26 and it's dead on. it's a cheap scope too.
sounds like it might be your "hold" and not the guns. |

I am quite inexperienced but I have found that how tight you hold can have so much effect that if you hold it wrong you can actually miss the target (8.5x11 inch paper) at 20 yards with a sighted in ready rifle but with the right hold you can get 1 inch or better groups at 20 yards with the same rifle. Both resting on a gun rest. |

All the U.S. states and all the Canadian provinces have them. If a person is too far away from a class site to attend, in many cases they may be taken online. Check your state or provincial department of conservation/natural resources for information. For purposes of hunting license reciprocity, all the states and provinces use the same core curriculum:

what you are forgeting is that springers kick forward and back so if you dont hold them as light as possible then they can be very inaccurate. Maybe the gun is sighted in and its just human error?? 9 times out of 10 that is what the problems is I always thought mine was bad until i looked it up on the internet and that is what i found. |

I did that training course too. I tried many others like Counterstrike and Battlefield but it's not a very efficient way to learn hunting skills. For instance, you don't hold your breath when you're going to fire a rifle. |
