Sorry won't be in this one. Head cold, sinus pressure right behind the eyes. Rough enough sighting in my new Crosman 3576 yesterday (took all the fun and pleasure out of it).

I'm new to this forum but can I assume this thread is open to suggestions?

It seems that only a couple of shooters made it this shoot, but both with good scores

Well done

I just had a comment on Fortnight Target 106. It might just be me, but I found it to be non-distinct as far as presenting an “aiming black” for each 10-value. This was especially true at a distance of 10 meters, where the lack of contrast made for a rather hazy sight picture. Perhaps this wasn’t quite as pronounced for the pistol shooters at 5 meters. Then again, like I said, it might just have been me.

Another comment I had concerns shooting time allowances. I realize this is merely an informal exercise designed for fun. However, I believe it could also provide the opportunity for individuals to improve their marksmanship skills. This opportunity could be negated somewhat if a shooter lets concentration on the basics suffer due to a feeling of being rushed.

If we look at time allowances granted by various competition authorities for standing/offhand courses of fire we find:

NRA Precision Air Rifle – 2 minutes per shot-for-record

NRA Precision Air Pistol – 1 1/2 minutes per shot

CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) – 2 minutes per shot

Conventional High Power Rifle – 1 minute per shot-for-record (Plus 1 minute for each of two sighting shots.)

Once again, I realize this is just for fun. I just don’t think anything less than an allowance of one minute per shot is conducive to improving the end result.

Anyway, that’s my 2 cents.

Discussion or comments?

Hi BobB,
I am also relatively new to the forum. I enjoy the Shooting Competition in its current form. Personally I like the 15 minute time limit. Since there is no pressure of being at an actual competition the 15 minute time limit adds a little pressure and keeps it interesting. I have been shooting air pistol silhouette Matches (30 seconds per shot) this is a bit closer to the AirGunHome Match time per shot than the Precision match times you referenced.
You may well have a point about the 10-value being difficult to see especially if you are shooting at 10 meters with Iron sights. At 5 meters with a scoped pistol this is not an issue for me. Unfortunately I will not be able to shoot at 10 meters until the snow goes away and my back yard dries up.
All things considered I find this is a fun match to shoot.

Hi Mark,

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I think these are fun matches to shoot too. I just wanted to post my initial observations and what my experience has been as both a High Power competitor and a past Director of a club Junior Air Rifle Training Program.

Yes, I am shooting open iron sights at 10 meters. This probably contributes to making the sight picture quite different than shooting the same target at 5 meters – with a scope! Plus, I’m on the far side of my 60’s, which also comes into play and doesn’t help.

As far as time allowances, the equipment can make a difference here too. Let’s take two extremes: When considering a CO2 powered air pistol versus a pump pneumatic air rifle, given the same time limits (short ones) and the proper amount of rounds fired, you can almost bet on which shooter’s pulse rate and breathing will be closer to normal at the end of that time period. And you might even be able to see the quality of shot placement begin to decline for the manual pump shooter about half way through the string.

Anyway, I think the “Postal Match” concept based on the honor system has always been a great one, in all its forms. It’s especially good for snowbound people over the winter months (as you know) and allows them, within the constraints of their indoor space limitations, to participate in some form or other in their enjoyment of shooting.

Onward and upward.

X2 I completely agree MJM.....

If you look at actual airgun competitions, allowance is normally 60 seconds warm up time, and 60seconds per shot...... so in reality 15mins for a 20-shot target is actually shorter than average FT time allowances...........I know this is not FT but, whatever, just my thoughts.....

The problem with shooting targets over the internet is that each person shoots in his own environment, so the conditions are completely different for each competitor apart from the target, and even that can change depending on the printer used, we also allow any type of sight to be used including scopes.

So we have to have a competition which suits most shooters and provides a bit of fun regarding target choice, plus there are certain criteria I use to make it as easy for the majority to enter, first is not to much ink used on the target ( ink is expensive ), usually not more than 20 shots at target ( Pellets and Co2 is expensive also ).

We have now split the Pistol and Rifle competitions so which ever you use it’s the same for everyone. We could extend the shooting time but considering the type of target we use I don’t think it would achieve much as most shooters finish well under the 15 minutes. The whole idea is to let as many people shoot under different conditions with any type of pistol or rifle and still have a controlled match, what suits some one week suites others another time, it does tend to stop one person winning every shoot.

Sorry I messed this one, actually shot and would have won the rifle but I just didn't get around to posting. I have to admit, something about this target really threw me off, might have been the single shot per target, or the layout, not sure.....

Anyways, I will get busy and shoot the next one. Keep up the good work.

cheers
Jeff
