I have a Crosman 3576 and don't want to push a metal rod down the bore as I am afraid to damage the rifling. I ask Crosman if I could use a Hoppes Bore Snake to clean the bore and mentioned that it has brass a bristle brush built into it. The answer I got was to run a cleaning patch through the bore to clean it.

So I am asking here if anyone knows if the brass bristles will damage the bore?

Thanks in advance.

It's not something to wish for. Cloth'll do, you can also use cleaning pelles in combination with a normal pellet.

With shallow rifling and far less temperature/pressure than a powder burner, you probably don't need the brush anyway:

Update I was looking at the brush and it was buried in the braided webbing and I just carefully spread the braiding apart and it pealed out from between the brush wires pretty easily leaving me with the snake brush less. Note at first I did not think it had a brush in it since it is so small but it was there.

Shoelaces?

I wouldn't be concerned about using a cleaning rod, as long as the diameter of it is small enough (I think it's a Dewey, that is about .125"). It is nylon coated and does not contact the barrel, if it should the nylon protects it.

Normally I use the q-tip shooting method for all my pumpups or if I had a Co2/pcp. With the springers I push the Q-tips through with the cleaning rod.

Most airgun barrels are left soft or with very little heat treatment, so personally I wouldn’t use a brush at all, some types of brass used in barrel cleaning kits is very hard and on an air gun can scratch the barrel.

Use just cleaning patches unless there is something seriously wrong with the barrel.

Al

I kind of felt that was the case and that is the reason I removed the brush from my bore snake. Since then I found out some airgun barrels are made of brass which could be damaged by brass tools. Someone should make a set of hard nylon tools for airguns for the occasional cleaning they need.

I think I saw a set of nylon brushes in my Cabela's catalog (book). Came in .17-.50. Weren't that expensive.

Researched bore snakes for my .177 Diana but settled on three feet of 3/32 In. Vinyl-Coated Wire Rope from my local Loews for $1+tax.

Cut a standard cleaning patch into thirds, lightly coat first two thirds with WD-40 and push each individually through breech until (usually) the last third shows clean out muzzle. The wire rope is stiff enough to make it through the barrel without bunching. Use an empty Crosman tin to store coiled rope. Cheap, effective and appears to improve accuracy.

Amazing how dirty the barrel becomes after only about 100 shots or so. Might be due to Gamo pellet quality, I don't know.

I like to use a piece of fishing line...poke the end through a patch, and melt the end into a little ball.I use "Goo-Gone" citrus gel available at your local super market as a cleaning agent. It works VERY well,as a matter of fact, the best AG barrel cleaner I have EVER used, and is completely safe......... Mr. Green

I run the first patch through completely saturated, the second half wet, half dry, followed by 2-3 dry....clean as a whistle. For 5 bucks, you get enough to clean multiple AG barrels for years... Wink

^X2....

I use a piece of (0.065") weed-eater line sharpened at one end and flattened at the other (melt it and push it against a piece of metal to flatten it).... It takes a couple of tries to get the right size flat.... smaller flat for .177, of course....

You use a .22 rimfire size cloth patch and push the pointed end through the center and slide it down against the flattened end.... thread the pointed end through the barrel and then pull the patch through.... You can use almost any cleaner (Hoppes #9, etc.) but don't get it on any O-rings.... I have heard about using Goo-Gone but never tried it....

I use one wet patch and then a dry one.... If it's really dirty, repeat the wet patch and then keep on pulling through dry ones until they are clean and dry.... Look through the barrel and if it's bright and shiny then pull through one patch moistened with oil to prevent rusting.... I find it takes 10-50 shots for the barrel to settle in after cleaning and the POI to settle down....

I never clean after each tin of pellets.... at least 1000 shots between is fine.... Some of my guns have probably seen 5000 between cleanings....

Bob

I hadn't thought of that.Seems like a better way than the fishing line, due to increased stiffness, thus more manageable.
