Hi guys !
I have a 2240 with crossman stock and a 14 inches barrel installed,
and was thinking of going to a 24 inches barrel, what could I gain from it ?
I do not own a chronograph so I do not know my present velocity, can anyone give me a good guess ? (I use a stock valve.)

While it's true, you will gain a few extra fps with a longer barrel, it won't be much. That's the bad news. The good news is, there's virtually a ton of information on tuning and modifying the 22xx series of crossman pistol/rifles. Just do a forum search for 22xx, 2240, 2250, ect. And you'll begin to see what I mean.

Mind you fps isn't all the one should be intersted in when thinking of modifying your ag. What do you wish to accomplish with it once you've modified your 2240? And then go from there as to which changes you will want to make.

good luck,

Jax

With the 2240 in .22 caliber you will gain FPS up to 18-19 inches of barrel with a stock valve. Beyond that length the return diminishes, and at 24 you actually are back down to where a 14 - 18" barrel would be due to frriction slowing the pellet back down. If you were switching to .177 there can be gains up to a 24" barrel on a stock valve. My suggestion would be to stick with no more than an18" barrel, not only for cosmetics, but also performance. Just my 2cents, but this has been well documented on several site including the Pymaryd Air Blog.

People often say the 18" barrel is optimal on this platform- but the 2260 (24" barrel) uses the same valve as the 2240.

If power reduction is an issue, you could smooth out the valve transfer port and install a heavier hammerspring to get around it- but then you will have the issue of a fairly long rifle- but no forearm to hold it; i.e. a difficult shooter.

I cannot give you anything "concrete" but I can tell you what mine did when it was factory stock, right out of the box.. The highest fps reached was 426fps , with a few just above 400.. At 30 shots fps was around 300fps. Remember now, this was FIRST cartridge I had fired through the gun..it was NEW! Probably get better numbers now, as I have fired 1000 rounds through it..but it has been performance modified, so cannot help you with valid numbers..Hopefully the stock configuration information will be of some use to you.

If you buy only 1 mod for your 2240, get a Crosman 22XX Rear Velocity Adjuster. This with a 24" barrel and you can crank the max out of your valve, drop in a 10" barrel, back it off and you can easily shoot 100 shots per cartridge. It is easily the most flexible piece you can get. I don't have a chrony either, but with a 24" barrel on mine and the adapter cranked up, it easily knocks down squirrels at a fair distance Smile

cheers
Jeff

Personally, modding a 22xx thing a ma jig won't be modding until you got the stuff to back it up with numbers. Wink

Wasn't aware of that Smile Though up here in Canada, that would be considerably more money and I'm not sure they would ship it.

cheers
Jeff

Crosman will not ship parts outside the US to consumers.

The 2300-124 is the rear pressure adjuster (which is the same as the RVA but with a set-screw in the side of the collar to lock the setting instead of a lock-ring around the bolt. $22.50 in Canada from everyone's favorite Canadian Crosman parts supplier.

Dang...didn't realize there would be THAT much difference in price...it would sure make me look else where..

I have 10 inch barrel on my 2240, and a BOSS valve from B&A, and 2 coils removed from stock spring....with adjuster out just to the point of zero spring pressure, I get 41 shots above 400fps. Shot #42 was 377.57fps-highest was 553.87, with a 42 shot average of 489.58fps. Indoors, 71 degrees with 11.9 rws hobby pellets.. If it were factory stock, I don't whether or not it would get 100 good shots (by good I mean over 400) or not..but I'm sure it would get a lot more good shots... the B&A valve does like air Mr. Green Mr. Green

And...let me re-emphasize what was said earlier ..the best $100.00 I've spent lately on airgun related stuff is the chrony..It has become a most valuable tool for me..I have mine set up permanently on one end of kitchen bar.
