| Been out of this for a LONG time, and to be honest I have been looking around and have found myself to be totally clueless. Just wanting some direction on air guns that will get some decent range, accuracy, and overall quality. Thinking $5-600 range....will spend more if justified. What kind of range are they getting out of these guns now days any ways?? Sorry for the clutter of questions......thanks in advance for any advice!! |

| Well its going to be for small game and target shooting.......so something that would be well rounded. Now as far as the rest I am in the dark with everything they have now.......back in the day I had an old benjamin and it was really all I knew beyound the crossmans that my buddies had (15 almost 20 yrs. back). I look at the stuff they have now and Im pretty much in the dark. |

.22 cal since you are looking at hunting/pest control.
Perhaps a nice spring piston rifle. The other guys here will know more about brands etc.
OH, and welcome to the forum. Lot's of good information here. |

In your price range you have a lot of choice.... You should try and narrow down what type first and then more advice will be forthcoming....
Springers (piston driven by a compressed spring or in some cases gas) are self-contained, tend to be heavier for a given power, and have a unique "double recoil" that is both hard on scopes and sometimes difficult to get used to.... especially in the higher powered guns.... They are basically unaffected by temperature.... and are cheap to shoot.... Price, performance, and quality vary over a huge range, low to high....
CO2 guns use 12 g (25-50 shots) or 88 g (150-300 shots?) cartridges or can in some cases be bulk-filled (for even more shots).... CO2 is a poor choice in lower temperatures as the velocity drops quickly below about 60*F.... but the velocities are pretty constant if the temperature is constant and you don't shoot too quickly (which chills the gun).... They are more expensive to shoot because you have to purchase CO2 in addition to the pellets.... They tend to be in the low to mid-range for price, performance, and quality....
Pumpers (multi-pump pneumatics) are also self-contained but require several pumps for each shot.... 10 is typical, but it can be more if you are trying to get maximum power.... They are cheap to shoot, like a springer, and basically have no recoil.... but slower between shots because you have to pump it each time.... They are basically unaffected by temperature.... and tend to be in the low to mid-range for price, performance, and quality....
PCPs (pre-charged pneumatics) require a separate hand pump or a high-pressure tank (like a SCUBA tank) to fill them.... They offer fairly constant velocity (1 to 5% variation) over 20 to 50 shots (sometimes more or less) between fills.... They tend to be a bit more expensive, especially when you add in the price of the tank and/or pump.... but once you've purchased everything, they are cheap to shoot.... They are typically in the mid to high-range for performance and quality.... and can be the most accurate.... They are basically unaffected by temperature changes.... The base model is a Benjamin/Sheridan (Crosman) Discovery which is about $400 with pump....
Think about the purposes you want to use the gun for, and the conditions (ie temperature) in which you will be shooting.... and also consider if packing a tank or a pump with you if you need to refill is practical.... Once you decide on which type you want, I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions.... In addition, you should state if your budget includes a scope or not.... and in the case of a PCP, a pump or tank....

rsterne hit the nail on the head!
for your money look at beeman R-9/R-1 DG
airarms tx-200/prosport. rws 350/460
weirauch 77/97 for springers
these are "magnum" powered-heavy recoil.
pcp's are vast. benjamin, airarms, weirauch, fx, evanix
to name a few....
with a pcp, don't bother with a pump, go directly to a scuba tank. |

I disagree.... With a Disco, the pump is all you need.... and it comes in handy for topping up higher pressure PCPs if your SCUBA tank can't quite fill it....

I know some people love springers, but my experience with them hasn't been good. I spent a small fortune trying to make a springer shoot like something other than a springer. The funky recoil makes the guns that are powerful enough to hunt with, impossible for me to shoot well. If you overcome that you will have to learn specific springer techniques and follow them to a T. Another real irritation for me is barrel droop on springers. For the life of me, I can't figure out why they can't make a springer with a straight barrel alignment. I think for me the only viable airgun is a PCP and that is why I ordered a Marauder. My advice is to listen to people who both love and hate each type of gun and get the whole story before you spend a bundle on a mistake.

Seems like the pump/tank war is heating up Personally, I'd rather push around a flat wheelbarrow than get the dang pump out. That's why I converted it to a solid rubber tire.

bob is right.(when is he ever wrong) i can't do a max fill on my marauder with my tank.
springers are more of an artform. if you can shoot a springer accuratley
you can shoot anything. and.... all springers are different...
the trick with a springer is a veeery loose hold with your forward hand.
if you come from a lifetime of powder burning (like i do)
it can be a challenge. |

My springer is a tack driver. I have a Crosman G1. $100. Maybe you have to spend less to get more. |
