Got a 500 tin of these on my last mail order. Pretty impressive...
13-77 with 24" Cr. bbl, Crusty B's delrin flat top piston, 6-24X 42 mm A/O @ 6X. 12 Meters. 5 shots. Gun and scope are sighted in for the 7.9 gr Cr. Field/Hunting point.
Over the Chrony, they average 609 fps m.v. over 10 shots at ten pumps out of the above gun. 20 pumps over 10 shots average 741 fps. This particular gun retains air at 25 pumps. At 24 pumps, it averages 763 fps. I still have to shoot a string with these pellets at 15 pumps to see what's up with the accuracy at that pump count. The gun barks and jumps a bit at 20 and above pumps.
This particular session created an oddity. I had decided to relax a bit, and get off the rest, and have some off-hand shooting.
The pellet caught the re-inforced section on the bottom of a 16 oz juice can. I was aiming to hit it.
That's at 15 pumps, and the can jumped a good 4 feet in the air when the 10.5 gr pill hit it. Talk about reactive targets
The recovered pellet. They should do well on small game at reasonable ranges- I.E. 25 yds and under.

Here's a penetration example in a piece of scrap Birch. Not an exact medium, but still of interest. The birch block was was 2"x 2" before I started whittling at it to get at the pellet. The ultra mag penetrated just a hair over 1/2" into that dense wood. 24" bbl 13-77, 12 M, 740 fps m.v.
It took me a couple of shoot and cut tries, before it dawned on me not to use a saw to get at the pellet. I started splitting the birch with a sharp wood chisel, and lucked into the result you see above. I kept cutting pellets with the saw :p
Here's the recovered pellet next to an unfired one, just for comparison.
It's kinda hard to tell from my point 'n shoot camera pic, but that skirt piled up against the head during expansion. Pretty impressive to my eye, anyways.
Of interest is the way the 13-XX platform reacts to this pellet. I'm driving it in the mid 740's m.v. this time around. It's interesting where the gun starts retaining air with the 10.5 gr- 23 pumps. The 7.9 gr pellets start air retention at 18 pumps, so go figure. Did I mention that I'm starting to like these pellets a lot?

You and Bob Sterne need to get together and document things- you can specialize in pellets, he can specialize in test management/documentation! |

Gonna have to scratch my head over that one for a while.... In PCPs, the heavier pellets retain MORE air - or at least the valve closes before Elvis leaves the building at a higher pressure than it does with lighter pellets....
I'm guessing that you are getting more FPE with the heavier pellets though (at the same pumps).... that's consistent with PCPs....

I can be an opinionated old curmudgeon at the worst of times- it'll probably be my final un-doing Still, it's nice to meet with, and get to know fellow airgunners. The best way is to meet at a shoot. Distance is a bit of a problem, though. If the chance ever comes up, it'd probably be a blast.

I think it may be temperature related. The gun is taking longer to warm up. We've been hitting the mid to low minus 20's for the last couple of nights. (the air guns are stored in my truck)
I shot for over an hour last night, and the gun was still cold to the touch. Next time I do this, I'm going to take the mike to the cold gun tube, just for chuckles...

since i responded to this post a little earlier, i managed to get some 10.5 gr Benjamin Discovery RHP pellets and shot them from the R10 and found them to be very impressive at even, fifty (50) yards.
the heavier ANY given projectile is, the more retained KE it will have no matter what speed it is traveling; the faster it travels, the harder it will hit.
so...the object is: to move the heaviest projectile possible, as fast as possible, from any given tool (airgun, firearm or bow) as accurately as possible. |
