The head broke off that little 4-48 X .25 screw that holds the breech down:

Of course, my hardware store doesn't have 4-48 screws, but I found out a M4-.5 screw will fit. The M4 is a few thousandths larger in diameter, and .5mm/turn works out to be 50.8 turns per inch. It goes in with just a little drag, and doesn't wreck the threads. In fact, there was just enough drag that I didn't feel Loctite was necessary.

I turned down the head diameter of a socket flathead screw, and cut it to length. Just thought you might like to know.

I think you mean a 3mm metric, not 4mm.... the 0.5mm pitch is right, though.... Wink

I destroyed the screw on my 2240 taking it out so I replaced it with a UK 6BA screw no problems.

It's entirely possible that it was a 3mm screw that got dropped in the 4mm bin. Now I'll have to go check and see what I actually got.

# 4 - 48 screw OD = 0.112"

3mm = 0.118"
4mm = 0.158"

I stand corrected. It had to have been a 3MX0.5 screw. Here are the 3M, 4-48, and 6BA side by side:

I reckon Bobs right I have just tried all three and the 4-48 UNF (2.845mm) fit’s the best, the 6ba is a bit loose and the 3mm tight.

Another thing while were on about sizes. What standard is a 2240 made to English, American or metric? As Americans say the gas tube is 7/8” dia and the barrel 7/16”, but I find them 22mm and 11mm respectably?

Plus what standard does Canada work to?

Crosman work to American sizes.... the tube is the standard for DOM tubing.... 7/8" OD with a 0.065" wall nominal size.... The barrel is probably slightly undersize so it will fit in a 7/16" drilled hole.... Wink

Canada is officially on the Metric system.... except for us old farts who insist on using the system we learned in school.... Faq-U .... However, because of the American influence, both systems are common here.... for instance all pipe sizes are NPT.... Rolling Eyes

We're going to convert real soon - I have a shop manual for a 1978 Chevrolet that says so.

We changed to the metric system in the early seventys, but considering we had BS Whitworth, BS Fine, Gas, BA and Model engineers threads, plus American Corse and Fine which we used on bicycles and CB radios, so being a war baby I just use the lot and can tell nearly any standard thread up to 1/2"/12mm just by looking at it, my party piece. Where'd that come from?

Yes, you need the screw to hold the breech to the tube!
