I am need of a scope with "AO". I'm on a tight budget and I need your opinions. I have been searching and I have narrowed it down to 2 scopes. That Tasco is affordable for me and, the Barska is at the very end of the line of my budget. I know they're not great scopes but, which would be the better choice?

Embarassed I didn't know I could focus my "Daisy PowerLine" 3-9x32 non-AO scope but, when I did, I started hitting bullseyes right away Cool . What can I say, I don't know much about scopes but, today I learned a little. That's what it's all about, livin' and learnin' Smile .

Well, to comment on your earlier questions, Barska does make pretty good scopes, for budget shooters. I don't own one myself, but the ones I've seen and looked trough weren't bad at all.

The Tasco scope is pictured with mounts, but I couldn't find anything in writing that said they were included. You might want to check on that.

The Barska has a mil dot reticle, which is nice for shooting at various (and longer) ranges. The Tasco has a 30/30 reticle, which means the thin parts of the crosshairs span 30" at 100 yards (an angle of 30 minutes of one degree, or 30 M.O.A.). I like the mil dots, but not for that difference in price. You can learn to use either reticle effectively.

When you say you focused your Daisy scope, do you mean you adjusted the rear (ocular) lens, or the front (objective) lens?

The ocular lens. I can adjust the objective lens, too? I obviously have a lot to learn

Probably, but not easily. You would need to make a special tool, which (if you're lucky) will only scratch the heck out of the area near the lens. If you're unlucky you trash the lens. AO scopes are a much better idea.

Parallax error happens when the reticle and image are not both in focus. The ocular adjustment is to bring the reticle into clear focus. If you have AO, you set it so the image is also in focus. If not, then there is only one distance "X" where the fixed objective will focus. That's what they mean when they say "parallax corrected for "X" yards.

You know how with binoculars or cameras it only takes a little adjustment to go from 100 to 200 yards, but to go from 20 to 50 yards requires massive adjustment? A scope parallax corrected for 100 yards won't be too far off at 150 or 200. An airgun scope corrected for 50 yards can be way off at other ranges within the airgun envelope. AO is beautiful.

So by adjusting the objective lens you can change POI?

Yes, but by accident. If the image and reticle are not both in exact focus for a given range (focal point on the same plane), the point of aim will shift around as you move your head. So, unless your head position is absolutely consistent from shot to shot, the point of aim (and therefore P.O.I.) will move.

Like I said, shooting a deer rifle at 100,150, or 200 yards there won't be a lot of difference. Shooting at airgun ranges it's a big deal.

You can see what I mean if you rest your gun with the scope aimed at a visible reference point. Look through the scope and move just your head. If the scope is "parallax corrected" for that range, the crosshairs will stay on the same spot. If not, they move around.

These guys call it the "head bop":

Another use for AO is range estimation. You bring the objective lens into focus and note the range, which will help you compensate for pellet drop. Field target guys have those big side wheels so they can spread out the calibration marks.

I really think "field target" has lost its roots as an art of hunting.

Who the hell actually sits like that in the middle of the woods or in a field? Only time I'm ever in that position is when up against a tree.

Thanks, guys. I ordered the Barska but, I sent it back because I didn't need it. I can see clearly out my Daisy Powerline now. I've learned that as long as I get my target as sharp as I can(in my scope), I can hit the target.
