So I purchased a new Crosman Phantom yesterday. We wiped the obvious surface oil off and shot some rounds thru it.

After every shot I have to blow the smoke out of the barrel. Is that normal and will it go away?

What other new gun maintence is required they dont tell you about??
Should you recrown a barrel just because? I can say the trigger SUCKS HARD.

Its shoots pretty good with match ammo. How accurate should a springer be at 20 yards? I was expecting the gun to be a little more accurate at 20 yards. It can shoot quarter size groups.

The small amount is dieseling is the factory anti-rust "lube" burning off- this will continue for a few hundred shots.

There's no reason to re-crown the barrel unless the existing crown is bad.

Yes, the trigger sucks- get a GTX II upgrade.

Quarter size groups seems more like the rifle is fine, but perhaps the shooter isn't quite accustomed to springers, yet. This is not meant as some sort of insult, but springers can be difficult to hold correctly, and the poor trigger doesn't help anything when firing.

Eric is correct on all counts.

Dab a cotton swab against the muzzle crown. If it isn't snagging fibers, you don't need to do anything.

The gun will take 800-1000 rounds to break-in. During that time you can experiment with different types of pellets, and also learn to hold it with the lightest grip possible. Spring piston airguns are funny in that regard.

The trigger will improve slightly, but yes - it is nasty. You're $40.00 USD away from a nice one - either the GTX (scroll down in the yellow column on the left to custom-gtx):

or the GTR:

Broke in what way?

Put the gun on a table so it will be steady and you can look at an object without touching the scope. Move your eye around. If the reticle appears to move as you move, then there is some parallax error (at that range). If the reticle appears to remain on the same point as you move your eye about, then it's parallax corrected for that range (meaning the image and reticle are both in focus).

Does the scope have an adjustable objective lens? If so, that's how you correct for parallax error at different ranges. Only the numbers on the lens probably won't match how it actually focuses. You'll have to calibrate it yourself.

Thanks for reply's!!

Parallax problems.
Its a Center point fixed.

I put the scope in a fixed position and moved my head around and the crosshairs would move up to 2" away .

The same amount my groups were.

I took it back to the store I bought it from yesterday (Big 5). They wanted to give me a new gun but I only wanted a new scope, so they grabbed a new box from the back room, opened the box and gave me a new scope. As I looked at the new scope I noticed it only has single set screw rings and there were attached to the scope alreay. Mine rings have dual set screws and 4 screws to hold the scope in. Also the rings came in a seperate box.

The new scope does not have a variable focus and it does not have ballistic marks. I kept my rings though.

I took it anyway. I looked at the numbers on the box and they were the EXACT same numbers?? Kinda weird.

Anyway. I put the new scope on and it shoot pretty good at 20 yards. It shoot good enough with wad cutters to nail the tacks that held the target on.

I am going to try and get some good ammo and try it again. I noticed the Parallax on the new scope moves a little with head movements but not nearly as much the original one.

What would you recommend for a good scope??

Even a scope without an adjustable objective lens will be correct at one range - it's just a matter of finding out what it is. Otherwise try to be real consistent with your cheek weld so you're always looking through the scope the same way.

I have a BSA 4X32AO with a duplex reticle on my Slavia, and it has served well for several years. My G1 (nearly identical to the Phantom) has the Crosman branded 3-9X32AO scope it came with (not Centerpoint). That one has a mil dot reticle, but the image is distorted at the edges of the field.

Hopefully someone will chime in who has purchased a scope more recently, but if I were to go shopping today I would look for the adjustable objective lens and a mil dot reticle. Magnification would depend on what I wanted to use it for.
