i've got a walther 1895 lever action pellet gun and i've put about 200 pellets through it so far. after today's shooting session, i emptied the rifle in my usual fasion - removed the butt plate/Co2 assembly, unscrewed the retainer that forces the two cartridges into the correct position and pierces the cartridges, and BANG, one of the two cartridges launched itself across my basement! thankfully, no one was there but me, and nothing was damaged, but now i've got to add the extra step of making sure the cartridges are completely empty before taking off the retainer piece.

anyone else been similarly lucky?

I have a walther lever action and there is always co2 in the capsuls when I remove them, I just unscrew the clamp slowly and let the gas out.

It sounds like the screw on yours is a bit short or the threads are striped? The one on mine has plenty of spare thread before it tightens up on the capsuls.

When removing mine as soon as the clamp goes lose I ease the capsuls out of the docking unit a bit to make sure they are not stuck, this is what could have happened to you, a stuck capsul.

gas escaping while i unscrew the retainer is what usually happens. i've been noticing that the cylinders seem to stick more often than not. this time I was able to get the retainer off completely before one of the cylinders came loose enough for the gas to leak. that's where the fun started. I do think there was one casualty - my AT&T U-Verse wireless router! the threads are long enough but i have heard where others experience a 'short screw' (no off color humor suggestions there!) in their CO2 assembly.

have you thought about how to modify that retainer to make it part of a cam lever/quick release for the CO2 cartridges? having to tighten the the screw until the cylinders are both pierced seems 'wrong' when a single locking cam type of motion would be more 'positive' without the stress on the screw threads. it'd also keep the lever aligned to fit in to the buttstock without having to keep an eye on it...

To be honest Rob I haven’t had any trouble with the Co2 capsules but it’s best if you don’t use Crosman ones, as the cap on them can tear the O-ring that fits around the capsule neck, the only problem I have had is damage to magazines caused by not pushing the pellets in far enough.

so what brand do you use, since all i see online are crosman?

I live in the UK and a company over here imports them from chaina by the container full, there is no makers name or markings on them but they are cheap. There is no lube in them, but this dosn't matter as I always put a drop of silicon on the tip before using.

I'm not to familier with American brands, but one I have seen is "Brass Eagle", or any that dosn't have a cap on the end like Crosman.
