So I am looking for a fun winter project. I love to tinker. I have a mill and am looking at a lathe in the near future.
So I thought it would be a fun project to build a custom .22 caliber pellet gun. I have been looking all around the web for some ideas and relized I dont know enough about pellet guns to make a wise choice.
I am looking for enough gun to kill a racccoon at 20 yards but mostly kill the darn possums that get in the chicken house.
I like the idea of a repeatable bolt action.
Something like http://www.airgunartisans.com/images/Bryan&Assoc/RepeaterTwoOfThree.jpg
But I am not sure what gun to purchase.
I also want to be quite so I can plink outside whenever I want so I thought about getting a maurader.
Then I started reading some about regulators. If I had a regulator I might be able to adjust the power and noise?? but I dont know enough to be sure what to purchase.
I am looking for opinions and what works with what. I am willing to spend the money on a maruader/scuba tanks so that would be my budget but I really want a mulipurpose gun.

Check this one http://www.pacificpelletguns.com/ and his vids here http://www.youtube.com/user/dt45acp
I'd suggest the Maurauder pistol and get a Crosman shoulder stock and good scope as well:
10 shot PCP pistol based on the new Crosman Marauder rifle platform. Same high performance as the Discovery based pistols, but with fast follow-up shots available.
STATUS : PARTS NOT YET AVAILABLE, SHOULD BE BY FALL 2009
The base unit of the Disco-pistolo looks like this and has a serious punch:
I'd like one, but money's to tight to mention, lala lala lala lalalaaaa
Maybe you could buy me one PLEASE? |

Those Pacific guys are funny- take a 2240, bulk it for HPA and called it a "Discovery pistol" that you sell in "mass quantities". They might find themselves in some trouble with Crosman doing that sort of thing...
As for project guns, the 2240/2250 platform is probably the most mod-able thing available. Parts from Crosman and/or relatively easily made. |

Awfully front heavy, and unwieldy as a pistol, no?
Maybe add a 1399 stock and a TKO break. |

I have been looking over that pistol. Looks like alot of fun but I am not real comfortable ordering from that web site. Does this place have any kind of reputation?
I like the stainless model for sure. What is the difference between a carbine and a PCP? |

The ones they sell are all PCP, currently based on the Discovery, in the future on the Marauder as well.
A carabine is a short rifle. Since they attach the 22xx frame to the Disco tube it's easy to replace the grips with a shoulder stock thus creating a carabine.
I read about this company at http://www.pellethead.net/ the day before you posted your question here. There's at least one customer active, you could ask him about this company.
They also customise pompers and do co2 but mainstream is pcp. |

Disco pistol.... NICE!
I'm hoping Benjamin/Crosman decides to do this too. There is absolutley a demand for that airgun.
One of the things I like about ariguns is the ability to put a shoulder stock on a pistol. That way you can have a compact, daypack portable gun for small game hunting. I think you're less likely to run into hassles with anti hunting 'activists' who will follow you around the woods screwing with you if you aren't carrying a gun when you go into the woods. Drive to where you want to go, pull the daypack over your shoulder, walk into the woods and pull on your cammo/ orange vest and put your pocket rifle together. Good to go. Putting a shoulder stock onto a 22lr pistol constitutes making a SBR (regulated, controlled special gun in the USA) $200 tax, fingerprints, intrusive federal presence in your gun safe. Most game officers don't know there is a legal way to do it, so the "know" you are hunting with al ILLEGAL gun and now you have trouble. Airgun is just an airgun. Short barrel, folding stock pocket rifle? No problem, it's just a pellet gun after all.
I have to get a Disco or Marauder pistol. My bank account says not now. Maybe by the time it's an option the factory may offer it. Then again, this guy will build one in stainless, and in .25 for that matter. As I said at the beginning of this post. NICE! |

I would recommend that you forget about air rifles for that purpose.... I have taken Raccoons with a .22 CB Cap (about 40 FPE) at 10 yards, but at 20 yards I wouldn't use less than a .22 Short....

Having given my opinion about taking Raccoons, I'll have a go at some of the other things in this post....
The B&A tubular magazine is not available, according to their website....
I don't know where you are from, but the Marauder is not available in Canada because it is considered "silenced".... I love the idea of the rotary magazine, but the closest I have found is this:
http://qbmags.com/index.html
I have one on order which will be going on my 22 PCP Carbine and I'll let everyone know how it works after I've tested it thoroughly....
At the present time, AFAIK, there is no internal regulator available for the Disco.... another forum member is making internal regulators as per this post:
http://airgunhome.com/agforum/viewtopic.php?t=4034
I asked him about prices, but no response in the thread so far.... I also asked him if he could make one for a Disco (3/4" OD) but his only response was that he could make them for "almost all PCP guns" if he knows the diameter of the air tank (which I gave him).... I would assume that since the Marauder has a larger ID air tank that would not be a problem.... You would have to PM him for more information, I guess....
If you build a gun similar to my 22XX PCP (link in your post) starting from a Disco tube, you could run up to a 2000 psi regulator.... but unless you put in a heavier hammer spring, you will get more performance from about 1600 psi.... If you utilize the performance possible at higher pressures and hammer spring settings, the shot count will suffer accordingly.... You can also build using a tube from a 2260 as I did in my 22 PCP carbine:
http://airgunhome.com/agforum/viewtopic.php?t=3837
Please note that for safety on HPA, you must not pressurize the rear section of the 2260 tube where the "roll stamp" is.... You will note that the valve extension / gauge mount I made has the O-rings ahead of that....
Just to give you an idea of what can be accomplished:
My 22 PCP Carbine (2260 tube) gives 15 shots of 20 FPE....
My 22XX PCP Rifle (1600 psi regulated 13 cu.in. JDS tank) gives 50 shots of 30 FPE....
My modified Disco gives 12 shots of 46 FPE with 28 gr. EunJins....
For the ultimate in PCP performance, I think a regulator is the way to go.... It allows you to choose the balance of power to shot count you want by simply adjusting the hammer spring with an RVA.... and not having to worry about the shape (curvature) of the shot string because the regulator keeps the velocity a constant....

Thanks for the reply.
Raccoons get in the chicken house, so they are head shots only if they are in the field or woods I can get them with the .22 so I would say 10 feet would be max range on a raccoon. The only reason I dont want to shoot the .22 in the chicken house is becasue of the proximity to the main house.
I am just south of you. I live 30 miles north of seattle.
So after doing some research , please correct my thoughts.
Starting point.
Base model 2250XT http://www.pyramydair.com/p/crosman-2250-xt-airsource-air-rifle.shtml
Regulator and tank http://muzzlemack.com/BulkAirProducts.aspx
I am not sure if the tank will fit the stock or if the regulator is adjustable yet.
Need filling options???
Dico valve and spring?? not sure what they are or where to get them.
Chrony for testing and tinkering http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Shooting_Chrony_F_1_Chronograph_green/1174
I would like some sort of burst device for saftey? Not sure where to purchase these or what I need.
a way to get the bulk tank onto the rear of the gun..
What else.
Also I like the idea of tinkering and learning vs just buying the Murader.
I have contacted Muzzle mack and I will try and get the parts from him.
I am really intrested the the loader that is posted in the above post... |

You can start with a 2250.... I would contact "yourdaddyjoe" on this forum (he is MuzzleMack).... he won't steer you wrong on converting a 22XX to HPA.... He can supply the rear tank mount, and probably the regulated tank as well.... maybe even the lines....
The Crosman/Benjamin Discovery (Disco) valve differs from the 22XX in that it has O-rings to seal the front end to the gas tube and an over-molded valve stem.... It should be OK in a 2250 because the roll-stamp (which weakens the tube) is shorter than on the 2260.... Joe & I came up with the extended valve front end to move the pressurized area ahead of the roll-stamp on a 2260 tube (for safety).... Both Joe and I recommend that you keep the regulator pressure below 1500 psi (JDS says 1400) so that you can fit the regulator with a 1.8K burst disc (they are + - 200 psi).... Good quality regulators come with two burst discs, a 5K one on the high pressure side and either 1.8K or 3K on the downstream (low pressure) side.... For safety, any 22XX tube should have the roll-stamp area NOT pressurized and a 1.8K burst disc fitted....
You can fill the tank with a hand pump such as a Hill, FX, or AirForce.... It's not as much work as you might think.... it takes about 2-4 pumps per shot (depending on the power of each shot).... You can also use a SCUBA tank, but unless you have 4500 psi tank with a 3000 psi regulated output on it, stick to a 3000 psi SCUBA tank for safety.... If you filll from a 4500 psi tank, it's only a matter of time until you goof on the valve and fill the tank on your gun to over it's 3000 psi rating.... If you fill a 13 cu.in. tank to 2500 psi you should get about 25 fills from an 80 cu.ft. tank.... If you fill to 2700 psi, you will only get half that....
HTHs....
