after looking around the web for anything and everything airgun related, it seems nobody mentions using one of these clamp-like devices to sight in their guns. is there any reason why they wouldn't work with a springer? taking it out to break the barrel and clamping it back in wouldn't be a problem, but i'm interested if anyone here has any input on this.

this is actually why i joined in the first place but i was really tired last night and ended up just replying to posts lol

Generally speaking, Springers like to be held loosely because of their unique "double recoil" (ie both directions), which occurs before the pellet leaves the barrel.... Many will not group well when held rigidly, and nearly ALL will not shoot to the same point of aim when held loosely compared to "clamped"....

HTHs....

Take a look at this site http://www.pyramydair.com/artillery-hold-video-article.shtml
It describes the artillery hold which is suppose to be a good way to hold springers. I've been sighting in my super streak and find that putting my hand on a sand bag, towel, what ever and resting the gun on the fingers and not the palm works well. But I'm still trying to find the best pellet for my gun. Someone else on this forum mentioned the perfect hold "Hold the gun without holding the gun" Basically hold the gun as light as possible while still holding the gun. Sounds easy doesn't it Rolling Eyes

maybe i wasn't clear, i was referring to one of those devices that you actually clamp your gun into to hold it still, not really a rest. i googled it and it said that's what it was called but i dunno. i've been getting good results resting it on a pillow but the "clamp" seems like a much more steady approach. thanks in advance

It would work if you ONLY shot the gun from that clamp. Due to the fact a different hold can alter your POI, you would have to have a death grip on it to replicate the clamp in the field. Waste of time.

Your description sounds a lot like a Ransom rest:

I agree with fritz. Besides, the pistol rest in the photo costs $700.00 USD. That would go a long way towards pellets.

I think the guys on Mythbusters have one of those, however when they fire the gun it clearly locks back from the recoil.

IIRC a 9mm Glock was pointing 45* above horizontal after firing a shot from that rest. Saw it on one of their MANY firearms myths.
