I'm picking up a BSA Ultra from a friend on my next R&R. I've already fired it more than anyone, and I'm really fond of it, but was wondering....

I'm not entirely sure that it's legal to have a supressor while hunting in my state, even with an airgun, so....is there a way to remove the supressor that doesn't involve a hack saw or a cutting wheel and a recrown?

I saw one in a you tube video, with the supressor totally detached and taken apart, but the dude had a British accent, where that kinda stuff is less questionable. I seem to recall that the ones in the US are marketed as "permanently attached" but what does that mean? star torqued? red loc-tite, silver soldered?

If I can't just remove the whole thing, maybe I can pull the baffles out?

thanks!

If it is permanently attached then you should have no problem. They are just concerned about you removing it and putting it on a firearm (so you won't be heard when you go politician hunting).

Uhmmm...yeah, it SHOULDN'T be a problem here, but the hunting laws here are frequently absolutely baffling. (Don't even get me started on the lower 48 animal rights groups that like to meddle in our affairs)

Here's a funny example: Up, where my family has a cabin, it's legal to shoot any grizzly, any time of the year.....As long as it's not a female...Now, I've used some darn impressive optics, but I aint found a pair yet that allows a sufficient pecker check of a grizzly at a distance I'd find comfortable, but that's the law..... Rolling Eyes

Possession I'm sure is not a problem, I was just concerned about the hunting issue, since camp meat critter gathering is one of the main purposes for this gun.

It looks like, if nothing else, and I'm in doubt, I could remove the baffles.

Thanks!

Why take off the silencer? its not like the noise without the silencer would scare away a grizzly? and if it is factory it shouldn't effect accuracy one way or the other? Question

+1 for what sniper said.

i'm not too concerned about what the ca laws say about air gun supressors/moderators/silencers/shrouds.

lots of differences in a firearm.

a shroud from an AF rifle would just make the noise louder on a firearm as it's just a hollow tube with no baffles...at least the one i have seen was.

as idiotic as the legislators in california are, they'd probably still want to out one that made the noise louder... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I've gotten the answers I needed from other sources, although I sure appreciate y'all's help.

I'm gonna get to keep it as is. Now my next question is how to make that goofy little can work better since I'm gonna get to keep it? Mr. Green

Depending on what you have in your silencer because BSA Ultra's do tend to change the internals now and again, some have perforated aluminium tube’s separated by brass baffles others just ScothBright scouring pads rolled up between the baffles, you could replace them with hair curlers and felt as used in Weihrauch silencers which are renown as the best type you can buy for an air rifle.

Have a look at this video made in the UK where silencer’s are used on nearly all airguns, but don’t expect 100% efficiency as this is not possible with standard silencers.

This site is based in the US and deals with all the in's and out's of owning, making, using and legalizing silencers in the US, it concentrates on the firearm market but the design principles are roughly the same, the main diffrence is you can make them out of lighter materials for air guns as there is less pressure to deal with.

http://www.silencertalk.com/forum/index.php

This site is handy for anyone in the US who wants to make a legal silencer, and get all the paperwork sorted out, all the information is in there. Plus you also need to give Uncle Sam $200.00. Mr. Green

Have Fun. Smile

Al
