I stumbled on this video of some guy using a springer and before closing the barrel he put 5-w40 in the skirt of the pellet and seemed to be more powerful. Is the because the oil doesn't compress rater then like air does?

and how bad is this for your gun? |

It's dieseling, that's not good. Before I knew about it, I had a MAJOR diesel in my 34. That little gamo match must have went downrange at 2,000fps. There was a cloud of smoke and a massive bang with the ever-audible sonic crack.
Don't mix oil and airguns. |

| The oil is burning (dieseling) as fritz said. More power at the expense of pressure stress on the spring. Heat damage to the seals. Degrading of the breech seal from the presence of a petroleum based oil. Crud in the barrel (notice the black residue around the holes?). More noise. Other than that it's a great idea, but I'll pass until they come up with disposable airguns. |

| aaaaAAAAHHHHH!!! I got it! wow. i cant believe i missed that explaination. Its called dieseling cuz because of the high compression that actually explodes like it does in the combustion chamber in the cylinder. I didn't know that was possible with air rifles. here is a question, what pneumatic guns like the beeman p17? |

With a springer you're taking all the heat energy in a large volume of air, and cramming it into a small space so quickly the energy can't leave - so the temperature has to go up. With the P17 you compress the air relatively more slowly, and pulling the trigger dumps the pressure.
Here's an experiment for rsterne - figure out how to cock a P17 so quickly (milliseconds) that it diesels in your hand. Well, maybe not. |

in the DVD provided by Airforce, tom gaylord recommends lightly oiling pellets for use in the AF rifles. he even describes how to oil them.
in a springer the air is rapidly compressed by the piston that's how a diesel operates...heat of rapid compression.
PCP/HPA/CO2 is already compressed as a propellant and is released to propel the projectile with little or no heat generated.
a springer compresses the air, then forces it thru a tiny orifice causing proliferation of heat genertated combustion...dieseling |

| Isn't the point of lubing pellets to help to maintain your barrel by essentially cleaning it with every shot? I don't see how lubing pellets could help with accuracy or velocity. |

| I'm not sure but I think the lube is helping the pellet form a better seal against the barrel. Allowing less gas to pass around the pellet and also giving the pellet less friction as it travels down the barrel, but I may be wrong. |

What a friggin' idiot. (the guy from the movie I mean) Bet he can't hit that book at 15 yards.

I think Olympic shooters lube their pellets. So it does help with something. :p |

It is a bad idea all the way around.Sure the dieseling this produces will increase your velocity, but your accuracy will be sh^t.I would much rather have a few hundred fps. less, and be able to hit a dime at 30 yards, than have a five inch group at the same distance.Once you hear that crack caused by the pellet breaking the speed of sound, your pellet will become unstable in flight, producing horrible groups. Keep your shots sub-sonic,and you'll shoot like a champ! |
