Hi.

I know very little about airguns, so please bear with me.
I just purchased a Gamo Silent Cat. I was going to get the Whisper, but from what I understand, the Cat is the exact same gun with a different stock and optics.

So far I am pleased with the performance of the gun. Very accurate and overall quiet.

After doing some googling/ research, I have stumbled across airgun "tuning"

From what I understand, it makes the gun smoother and removes some of the spring "Thump"

That sound like something I need!

So my question-

Can I tune the gun myself and save the $120.

Well, that Gamo is a pretty reasonable starter rifle.

If you're handy, tuning won't be hard. Just make sure you read up on your gun. Wink

Hi..welcome..

Its no big drama to do a basic tune with
tools yer fined in most home workshops..
If you have or access to a lathe...then
anythings possable...

The first thing you WILL need is a spring
compresser...A simple T bar style clamp will
work just fine...

If you do pull it down..Replace the piston seal
Thats one thing that gets stuffed when they assemble
them in the factory...

J Maccarri has all the lubes/ seals etc that you will require..

while yer at it toss in a GRTIII trigger

Back to the original question- the idea of a "tune" is too smooth out the gun and possibly bring up the power a bit in the process.

You need to sand/de-burr any parts that rub against one another- for example honing the tube the piston sits within is usually a good idea. Sanding the trigger parts helps smooth things out, and the GRT III or the GTX II triggers make a huge difference. Lubing the gun properly is standard practice as well.

Thanks for the replies.

I shot a bunch of rounds through it this weekend.

I'm a good shot with a powder rifle, but i suck with the silent cat.

I can't keep a tight group no matter what I do.

At first, I thought the scope's parallax may have have been a problem.
I adjusted and still can't hit anything.

I guess the spring recoil is throwing it off.

I don't know how other guns operate, but this one kicks pretty good.

What do I need to do to shoot a tight group?

Welcome to the forum, soundguy.

Like you found in the "sighting in" post, practice the lightest hold possible while still maintaining control. Also remember that your gun will take 500-1000 rounds to break in.

The replacement trigger is a good idea. Simply removing the trigger spring does lighten trigger pull, but it also leaves the trigger without anything to return it to its full-forward position. The replacement trigger solves that by using the intermediate sear (sometimes called a strut) to return the trigger.

Making a spring compressor is a necessity if you go inside the gun, for both safety and practical reasons.

Tackle one thing at a time and people will help you through it.

The trigger arrived yesterday.
It was very easy to drop in in.

What a huge difference that made!

Now I just have to tune it.
