Hi folks, I have a question...go figure, eh?...anyway, if you read my intro you know I have an older HW80 that has sat in a box unused for about the last 20 years, I took the stock off to re-finish it and put it all in a box when I moved and am just now getting it going again...I mounted a fixed 4 power Barska scope to it cuz the front sight has gone missing. Using some old Sheridan pellets, 14.3gr.20, I can get 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 groups at 100ft. I'm sure the rifle is capable of better...These are the only pellets that I currently have, so I dont know if another brand will do better...probably will...

My question is regarding barrel tension. I read on here that the barrel should stay in any position you leave it in, after cocking. Mine, after its cocked, has a bunch of play in it and wont stay anyplace but straight down. In fact, if I hold it almost closed, but not latched, and rock it back and forth, there is about 1/4 inch of play out at the muzzle...that cant be good...

How do I go about tightening that slop up? I havent seen the answers anywhere so I'm hoping someone can fix me up...I tried snugging up the two screws that the tube pivots on but they dont tighten, just kinda spin...not like they are stripped, just that they wont tighten against the tube...I stopped before I went any further, knowing enough to ask those that know first, before making a mistake....So, what do I do?...

tighten up the pivot bolt....
the main thing is that it dosn't move when
closed & the latch is tight...If not try removeing
the unsprung wedge type pin and putting a
thin shim washer in the hole to pack the pin
foward so it ingages more firmly with the
spring loaded pin...Or you can do the same to the
spring to put a bit more pre load on the spring.
But make shaw the spring can still compress enough
to let the barrel open & close...
It can be a bit of trial & error to get it right....

I understand it needs to be solid when locked up. It is. Are you saying that when cocked and open it doesnt need to be tight? That was the understanding I got from reading a post on here..leastwise, I think it was here. Laughing

I've read a bunch these last couple of dayz..

So, what would be an average group I can expect out of this rifle? I would like one ragged hole at 100 feet, if possible...Its a 500 dollar rifle, its got to do better than 1-1/2 at 100'...I know I didnt do it any favors by leaving it in a box for 20 years, do you think its pissed at me?..I dont want to do any surgery just yet, I'm thinking a change of diet and maybe some kind words will help....The trigger on this one is very sweet, just thinking about it and it goes off...If I was guessing, I'd say 'tween 8 and 10 oz, but I dont really know...I aint touching it tho....I'll try other pellet types and get back to ya....

Thanks for the help.....anything else anybody wants to toss at me, I'm all ears...and itchy trigger fingers...

When I first tightened them, I did one side and then the other without paying any attention to if the opposite side spun or not. After realizing that was what was going on, I did tighten them against each other. It feels like it may either be shoulder bolts or the ends are hitting each other inside a female sleeve cuz they get tight, but it doesn't affect barrel tension..

Thanks for the exploded view...I saved it for future use...I'm sure it will come in handy...

I am currently out of ammo, shot around 300 rnds this evening...I still cant get under 1-1/2 groups at 100'... Embarassed

What pellet should I try next?..guess I'm going shopping tomorrow... Smile
