So I shot a bird today with the talon. Clean one shot one kill. I was using .22 cal Rockets which are like pretty much the best. Anyway, I shoot the bird and it barely moves. It was about 13 yards out but I could see it still holding its head up. (Don't worry it wasn't suffering).

When I went out to collect the kill I saw a small burst of feathers sprayed out behind it, from the exiting of the pellet I assumed. Well, normally you'll see the hole in the bird or there will be blood coming out its mouth or on the ground. But not this time.

When I was cleaning it I examined it closely. It's head and neck were definitely not touched. I looked all over that tiny bird and found no entry or exit wounds. When I cut it open the internals seemed unscathed too. The breast meat had no holes in it. Were it not for the feathers on the ground I would've thought it had a heart attack when it heard the shot or something. There was just no hole to be found on that thing. Very odd.

Rockets are great because you get the penetration of hard steel bbs and the wieght and knockdown of lead. And as if you needed another benefit, the bbs detach upon impact usually, which gives you fragmentation of sorts, causing further damage.

Maybe it's the same thing that killed your bird? Mr. Green

Hahaha. OMG, I come home today and find a couple severely decomposed bird carcasses in the corner of my yard. Clearly thrown over the fence by the neighbor. I know a few wounded birds had made their way into his yard over the last couple weeks, and probably many more over the course of the last couple years. I guess he got tired of being on carcass disposal duty. Laughing

But what am I supposed to do? I shoot the birds in the chest and they fly off. I shoot em' and the pellet doesn't even hit em' and they die on the spot.

IMHO, I'd have to say a concution injury of some sort. I've shot enough mice with my 1077 and 1088. Admittedly neither are very powerful, but the mice were still dead. Never seen a bit of blood though. I'm just guessing you didn't hit it square on, but rather more of a glancing blow that was hard enough to stop the heart and knock a few feathers off at the same time.
