First I want to say thanks for all of you who responded to my first inquiry. I can tell this is an intelligent group on this forum.
My next question is does anyone have any experience with installing a gas piston (Gamo Whisper VH) and is it something that someone with a bit of mechanical intelligence can handle? Are there special tools needed and if so what are they and where can they be found? Where is the best place to purchase a gas piston? (I noticed on the one web site that sells these they make a strong warning against attempting installation. Is it really that tough?)

| With the appropriate set-up, anything can be done. I think the reason all the sellers of the gas pistons are "recommending" professional installation and such is because they don't deal in service parts normally and the idea of "user installed" parts worries them- as in they perceive it is a legal issue, not necessarily a practical one. Don't misunderstand, I'm sure installing a gas spring has its own set of issues to be overcome and safety precautions to observe (there's my legal disclaimer), but is a professional installer really required? Seems unlikely. |

For sure you will need a spring compressor so nothing goes SPROING, injuring you and spraying parts all over the shop. (That's possibly why they don't want you to do it yourself - liability, like Eric said.) Something like this:

First we must observe the CYA (cover your a$$) practices. That is likely why manufacturers want a professional to install their products. Also us at AG Home assume no responsibility for any misinformation or losses (bodily or financially). You do these things at your own risk.
That said... it's not that hard to install a normal steel spring, but a gas spring is likely MUCH more difficult. Personally I would have one installed professionally, or should I know a professional maybe they could walk me though it *in person*.
As I have no experience installing spring of any kind, I cannot personally give much advice. |

| I was thinking about doing the same to my Whisper .22.I don't think it would be that hard to do,but if I decide to do mine,I will send in to Pyramid Air.They will do the installation for free,if you purchase the gas ram from them.Takes the headache out of the situation if you ask me. |

I would assume that if its a replacement option for the
gun you bought it for it should be a stright forward install...
As already stated...a spring compresser should be the only
speicalised tool needed.....
But if it not made for the gun you intend to install it
in....well thats a whole other ball game.....
but a fun game |
