No experience with airguns but in burners, I've had excellent success with square springs. I put a square wire recoil spring in my 1911 that lasted about 4 times longer than standard round stock springs. I've also seen good results in other burners, if they're available for AGs, I'd certainly be willing to give them a try.

mmmm, interesting. theres a spring in the UK called the OX accelerator, that has a thicker wire, comments from guys from thuk say they are harsh and aften have to be cut down. But, they are supposed to have a very high cocking poundage as they are very stiff. Might add an extra 100-200 fps to a moded phantom. But you never know, might blow the seal up too fast.

They get a lot more poundage per inch of spring than round springs can obtain, but they do tend to break when working to there full power, also there is a lot of extra weight moving around and this increases the kick, and they are harder to cock than a lower powered round spring.

"but they do tend to break when working to there full power"

I did a bit of readin, sounds like guys say to cut them down or buy them a biot short so that they are under very little compression when installed.

I'll post if i give one a shot. Smile

Where can you find "Ox" springs in the US? I thought they were a U.K. only sort of item?

Just to add to this post, I fitted a Ox spring to my BSA Lightning XL despite all the rummors off harsh firing and the Ox spring rattling guns apart.

I find that the rifle now fires more accurate than it ever did, the recoil is not that much different from the standard spring, it tends now to recoil straight back in a straight line, as before with the standard spring, the recoil was more a left to right recoil, if that makes sence, This could have been down to the standard spring being cut and did not sit straight in the tube???

As for power output, it did increase, but not by much, I now sit at 12FPE with crosman accupells (7.9 gr) this is a .177 rifle. I presume if my rifle was a .22 I would be looking at more FPE. I think in the UK as we are Limited to 12FPE the springs are made to a lengh that will only produce this amount of power, If these springs were made for export I guess they would be longer.

But all in all the Ox spring has made my rifle shoot smoother and more accurate. There is a bit more cocking effort involved but nothing over exherting. I was hoping for more FPE but I am happy with it for now.

I ended up trying one in my phantom. Mine acctually has a slighty LOWER velocity, not sure why.

But for whatever reason is extremely smooth and quiet when i cock it, much more so than the stock spring. Not sure where all the "harsh" comments come from either???

The new Ox spring was actually 1 inch longer than the origonal, that I removed, which was giving me 11fpe. Putting in the New Ox spring with around 10mm of extra spacing in the piston which is the max pre tension I could put in and still be able to cock the rifle. and this just brings me to the 12fpe limit with 7.9gr pellets.

I too can`t understand the lack in power, but like I say the rifle shoots 100 times better and smoother. No left to right recoil and I can hit a coke can at 50 meters.

Maybe someone can explain the lack of power gain. I did put quite a bit of lube every where, but noting too excessive.??

Might it be that you have a certified 12fpe gun?

I would think that 12fpe springers have a smaller/larger transfer port so that it it cuts down on the power output?

Wanting more FPE in the UK is a lil' bit of a bad thing, shame on you! Thwackin' time Unless you hold a FAC permit, but that means you could have gone for the FAC spring in the first place, and that would've probably ment that the OX spring wouldn't have done that much good to your gun.

On a side note, this topic was started to get way higher FPE's then is allowed in the UK.

@ Fritz:

You only hace to exchance barrels for the BSA Lichtning, I think they are most efficient at 16 Fpe in .22.

Could well be, but I was under the impression that they were all made the same?? You can get a FAC kit for the BSA, and there is no mention of opening up the transfer port in there.???

I know the .22 versions have a shorter spring but different size transfer ports?

Oh, right, my point was that they don't use different transfer ports, so it's easyer to switch barrels. Kind of what I heard though. Wink

So do you think that 12fpe is about the limit for a .177 lightning? I know its easier to up the fps on .22, but I really prefer the smaller caliber.

a .177 pellet weighing 7 grains would have to travel @ ~880 fps to achieve 12 fpe.
now i'm no expert, but i would think that a 7 grain pellet could be propelled faster than that.
