Just bought it. I've fired maybe 25 shots without any problem. I cocked it, loaded it, pulled the trigger and nothing. I've flipped the safety on/off numerous ties, tried adjusting the trigger pull, nada.

Any ideas on what to try next or just take it back to the seller (and oh crap, the box is broken down...)

TIA

Doug

That sucks. Neutral

Either the trigger OR the safety is broken. I'd take it back.

Did you try cocking it again? Maybe you forgot to, I've done that before.

Most likely the spring could be broken. You can tell this by trying to cock it and there is reduced cocking effort. There would also likely some grinding noise, and it wouldn't let you cock it beyond a point.

No grinding noises but when I cock it, once you get past the initial force required to move the barrel, there's no really effort required. The barrel moves to the full limit when cocking.

Thanks. Guess I'm headed back to the seller in the next couple of days.

Is it actually cocking and not releasing?

When you are done the full cocking stroke, does the pressure release so you could take your hand off the barrel?

Welcome to the forum, dogugotw!

It sounds like it's cocked but not releasing. Any one of a number of things could be wrong, but in any event I would take it back. If I were in your position, the only question in my mind would be how to take it back safely (right now it's cocked and loaded).

Make a long rod from a wire coat hanger. Crack the barrel open enough to push the pellet through and out, so the gun is at least unloaded. Keep your fingers out of the breech (loading) area, so if it lets loose suddenly the worst that will happen is the coat hanger gets mashed.

Tape a big sign to it saying that it is cocked and potentially dangerous, and return it. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, tell the clerk that it is cocked, and crack the barrel open to show that it is unloaded. Then let them deal with it.

An aside: If you wind up exchanging for the same gun, consider a trigger upgrade. For under $40.00 USD there are drop-in triggers available that will transform the way it shoots.

Keep in touch. There is a place here just waiting for you.

With the barrel fully cocked (bent), I can remove my hand and nothing moves.

Cocked, not loaded. I pulled the pellet out when it failed to fire.

Any specific recommendation for a replacement trigger? I'm new to pellet guns and would appreciate a reference.

My thanks to everyone responding - this has been hugely helpful.

GRT III or GTX triggers are the most common replacements. Never bought one, don't know where to get but you can order online.

This site sells the GRT III trigger. There is a list of guns that it will fit, and the Remington Vantage is among them. There are also detailed installation instructions, so you can decide if this is something that you want to attempt:

Here is another site with a similar offering, the GTX trigger (scroll down to custom/gtx):

Thanks for the links. I might give that a try once I get a working rifle back in my hands. I wish the instructions included a few more images...I'm kind of a 'see and do' guy...The troubleshooting guide seems to provide a bit more in the graphics department. <edit> I went to the 2nd link and LOTS more purty pichers...makes much more sense with the way those instructions are written and the process doesn't look too bad.

<change> I'm finding the difference between air gun triggers and my 'real' rifle triggers kind of interesting. In both my .22 and .270 the triggers don't have any travel; you pull, the trigger sits there and then it breaks and the gun goes off. On air guns, there's some actual travel in the trigger (and on the Vantage it seems like a LOT of travel before it goes off). I have an old Daisy Eagle that does the same thing. Any idea why the difference?

Because you're holding back a massive piston and spring, rather than a wimpy little hammer or firing pin. You need some decent sear engagement - if it were parked right on the edge of oblivion it wouldn't be safe.

That's the beauty of those aftermarket triggers. You still get full sear engagement, but the transition to stage two signals the gun is about to release. Slide through stage one, get a final sight picture, and just a little pressure in stage two sets it off.

Thank you for the explanation.

Oh, and the store is going to replace the gun. They're currently out of stock but have no problem issuing a replacement.
