The guy you're talking about was an idiot named Timothy Treadwell and he was once quoted as saying "I'd be honored to wind up as bear scat."

I personally kinda wonder if maybe he changed his mind right there in the last few moments.

Seriously, this guy was a wackjob of the first order. Totally nuts, he had no clue as to what bears did or why, he was truly a product of the Walt Disney School of Natural Sciences. He thought bears were all cute and cuddly just like the soft fluffy one his momma used to tuck him into bed with every night.

He was honestly surprised when the bear started eating him.

The sad part of the story, is that he actually conned some idiot girl into going up there with him and she got killed trying to save his sorry, insane, a$$.

The irony is, that his "love" for the bears led to the bear that ate him (yeah, it didn't just attack him, it ate him because it was old and starving.) having to be put down as a man eater.

The wierdly funny part was, a year after the incident, his "girlfriend" (He was gay. So gay that gay guys would look at him and say "Damn, he's gay!") claimed his Casio G-Shock watch from the coroner who dug it out of the bear's belly. (While still attached to little Timmy's arm) and the G-Shock was STILL TICKING!

Way to go Casio! You just can't buy advertising like that. :D

Ah, I remember that idiot. Wasn't he the one that was doing anti bear hunting lobbying, while all his video was actually taken in a national park where there's no hunting allowed anyways???

Yup, he's the one.

This guy was a mess. He actually did more damage to the bears than any small amount of "help" he gave their cause. By deliberately flauting the regulations on where he could camp, what seasons he could be on the island, and avoiding the bears, he worked very hard to reduce the bear's fear of humans, thus increasing the likelyhood that they would one day end up in a violent encounter with a human. In a bear/human encounter, the bear ALWAYS loses. Oh the human may be eaten but the bear is almost certainly going to be hunted down and killed.

This idiot was no good to bears or anyone else on this planet. His stupidity was incredibly expensive and like many hard core idiots, others had to pay the price for that stupidity as well.

He clearly had some sort of psychological disorder. This was beyond some romanticized conservation effort.

I remember flipping through the channels a couple years ago. Then I see some guy standing in a stream with some wild bears. It struck me as odd, because I'd never seen that before. The bears were looking at him like "WTF are you doing here dude?"

Bears and humans simply don't mix. Not on any level. It was just a matter of time before he was mauled or killed.

Also, why did Timothy sound and act like a woman?

For those who don't want to bother watching the movie...

Treadwell got away with what he did for 13 years and in the end, he died because he broke his own rules.

For 13 summers, he camped in Katmia National Forest, most of that time camping illegally in off limits zones and hiding from the park rangers whom he viewed as enemies who were just being mean to him by not letting him commune with the bears. (No kidding, these are pretty much his words.)

He would spend the summers up there during the time when the bears were feeding heavily on the running salmon and storing up fat for the winter.

As much as I hate anthropomorhizing the bears, when you watch his video footage, you see that he irritates the bears but its almost as if they tolerated his presence because they could tell he was obviously "touched." As wierd as this seems, there is a long documented history around the world of the mentally unstable being given deferential treament by wild animals as long as they did nothing which overtly threatened the animals. This may account for why so many aboriginal people around the world hold the mentally ill in some level of respect.

Or, you can sum it up by saying: "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread."

Anyway, he got away with this for 13 years and then after leaving at the end of the summer, in a fit of defiance against park officials, returned to the national park for an extended stay.

The only problem with this, was that the fish were no longer running, the vast majority of bears had already settled down for hibernation, and the remaining bears were mostly the older and weaker specimens who had not been able to put on enough fat to last them through the winter.

Most bears in such circumstances don't make it through the winter. They're hungry, they're old, they're sick, and they're looking for easy meat anywhere they can find it.

It was one of these bears that Treadwell encountered on his final trip. The shame of it, was that the bear was simply acting as nature had designed him to act. There was no malice, there was no evil intent, simply a very old and hungry male bear looking for a meal to keep him alive through the winter.

Treadwell had never made any effort to learn anything of bear behavior except through his own rose colored and hugely misguided observations. He had 13 years of mistaken assumptions working against him and he did far more harm to the bear community of Katmai than any poacher ever could.

Yeah, I know I tend to get long winded about this subject but Treadwell for me at least, perfectly sums up the stupidity of the "feel good nature lovers" who look at wild animals as noble creatures living at harmony with each other and point these animals out as an example of how good we humans could become if only we acted more like the animals.

These poor unfortunates are isguided to the point of insanity, and the true insanity is that the media legitimizes the madness by giving these lunatics a podium from which they may further their insane agendas.

Kinda sums up everything that's wrong with our society doesn't it?
