If the powerplant is a compressed gas (i.e. Co2) I don't see why the same gun shouldn't also be a PCP- just needs to have a different valve and a regulator. Which, for a modular gun, shouldn't be much of an issue.

Or, use a valve that already exists and will work for both- i.e. one from a Crosman Discovery.

The Disco Tube is made to take higher pressure, which automatically makes it more expensive.

People have tried filling a Crosman with compressed air, without exceeding 70 Bar. Not to many shots from that set up. Neutral

With more and more clip fed, and multi shot ag's these days, would this type of gun be a single load thumb pusher, or would it be worth having some sort of magazine? Especially since it is not a springer, multi shot capability is more feasible, not to mention a really awesome feature.

I don't find it hard at all to cock a bolt and slip a pellet in without losing my line of sight. Just learn to work the action while following a target.

I dare say- I think we are getting more response to this idea here than the site dedicated to it is getting. Of course, some of this might be because the host provider for openairgun.com apparently has over 11 million websites hosted on the same server (that's a big 'holy sh!t' there- most servers with 500 domains on them bog down if any of them have a good amount of traffic- but 11+ million- that's insane!).

You're right Eric, post your ideas on the site!

I have the portal on a server at my office, and I assure you that there's no 11 millions of sites on it Smile it's probably just the host of the DNS records.

About the stocks and skins; yes, I would like to see different adapters, for example AR15 stocks and grips and for 1911 grip sides.

It's in the same vein as crosman, but instead of a 40 year old model, it could be done based on an modern design. Sh*t, Crosman doesn't even have a scope rail mount on their guns. That's absurd. They could make this thing fully modular and have scope rails on all sides of it if you wanted to go fully tactical.

The key is to make each component autonomous in itself, so that it does not require another part of the gun in order to work (interchangeable parts). Make it simple, but in such a way that it can be very complex if you want it to be.

I'm still just describing crosman arent' I? Damn it! Rolling Eyes

Dead on target. But why do you buy the crosmans? to keep the pot metall grip and crappy trigger mechanism? Why not someting better?

Simple reason- economics. The base 2240 is a $60.00 USD gun and fully functional out of the box. Upgrades/customizations typically don't cost more than a couple hundred more, maximum.

A custom gun project made by a bunch of small fabricators would very well cost far far far far (did I mention far) more. This is not the point, as anyone getting involved is such a project must surely understand this, but then your question becomes moot as well.

For the first few hundred units, I will be both surprised and shocked if a ground-up modular gun could be done and the end-result costing someone who is not doing any of their own parts fabrication less than $300.00 (which would be cheap)- probably closer to $5-600 I would bet. For a completely 'open' and modular gun this would still be reasonable assuming it shoots straight- but becoming an economical proposition is not likely until the platform has been proven and competition from different fabricators appears- in the early stages it is likely only one person will fabricate a part, not 4 or 5 to allow competition to start. The whole project is an R&D affair.

Don't misunderstand, it is a good idea which will hopefully result in an interesting end product- but to try and compare apples to oranges with nothing on the drawing board as of yet is a bit premature.

I guess you're right about the economics. A 2240 is about $125 here in Sweden, so my calculations was a bit off. Still I would like something with a little better base quality and finish than the Crosman guns, and perhaps with some new fresh ideas incorporated.

There's no doubt that this will be something for the enthusiasts, not something you'd pick up at Wallmarts on your way to the weekend house. Smile

The lack of a weekend house puts me squarely in the Crosman camp.

Get the two books by H.M. Buckley. Everything you need is in there.

Building an airgun is by no means difficult. Doing it safely, economically and in some areas legally is, though.

Otherwise it's a nice idea Smile What I miss though is a bit about licensing [the design]. Second, how is the project going to prevent using protected intellectual property? It's all too easy to "borrow" concepts from other designs (there's only so many ways of doing things) which will invalidate the "open" part of the airgun quite quickly. So basically, how "open" is this project going to be? Open as in "everyone can join in" or open as in "the design and concepts are free to use, modify and distribute in any way, shape or form as stipulated by this [open hardware] license".

Yes, these are points which distract from the fun part, thinking about and designing an airgun, but nontheless important ones to consider.

There ya go, my first post Smile
