should be about 613 pounds of force driving the nail (2.5 inch piston)

little over a quarter ton

that is basically what i am doing, but the piston is not in contact with the pellet

(i don't think the piston is moving that fast, that is just the force it puts out)

the problem with the "nailgun with a barrel" idea is mainly that the nails are not driven directly by air. the air drives a ram, which is basically what he drew on the old school paper. the principles of driving a cushion of air versus driving a nail are going to be DRASTICALLY different. just try to drive that nail with a blast of air without the ram.

from what i can gather from his drawing and description, he's basically re-inventing the gas ram spring gun. instead of the gas ram being a closed unit, hes hooking it up to an air compressor.

the other end in the "ram" would be used to compress air
it would not touch the pellet

and yes, the gas spring kinda sounds like it would be close

Doesn't that just waste air? Because it's taking its energy into the machine that has friction so some energy is lost before it hits the pellet.

Why not just hook up the air to a valve with a hammer setup? But that would really just be airguns now.

What were we trying to make in the first place?

yea, i am probably going to have a valve after the compressor (air ram) because it woudl not build up fast enough to get full force behind the pellet

(i think that is what you were basically saying)

the friction would lower the pressure, but the momentum of the piston may build it back up

i would probably have to have the air ram hit a valve at the end of its stroke so that it would have max pressure

see, this is why i came here so you guys can point stuff out that i may over look. Smile

You could just reinvent the modern pcp gun...

Schrader valve, hammer, spring, tank, barrel, breach, trigger.
