Hey, anyone ever drill out the transfer port on a phantom/quest or any other of its variants?
I have read that increasing it to 1/8" or 0.125" can raise the FPS by about 100
I have also read that its a good way to cause more recoil and psiton slap.
Anyone tried it? |

Not tried it, but using heavier pellets you can reduce that increase of recoil and piston slap. |

| I read someplace that the transfer port also contributes to piston braking, and opening it up means your are stuck using heavy pellets to prevent that "piston slap." |

Just eyeballing my G1 with the calipers, I get 0.103" - but since it is a Chinese gun that probably means 2.5mm, which would be 0.098. |

Thanks Blas,
Looks like there somebenefit to opening it up to 1/8" .125" or so. WHat is that about 3 mm? |

Heres are two quotes from the pyramid air article Blas posted:
"0.110" limited the velocity available in the .22 caliber barrel shooting .22caliber Crosman Premiers by about 50 f.p.s., and a port size of 0.125" gave the highest velocity recorded."
"A larger port of 0.145" gave identical velocities as the 0.125" port, but 0.155" was about 20 f.p.s. slower. The optimum range of port sizes for a .22 caliber Beeman R1 falls between 0.125" and 0.145"."
There was a drop in velocity when a .177 port is opened up too much as well, which leads me to believe that the port size in a gun like the phantom may be a compromise between the ideal port size for .177 and .22 so that they can be tooled the same.
So would 1/8" to 9/64" (0.125" to 0.141") be optimum for a .22 Phantom?
I am thinking sticking to 1/8" might be the better choice as it offer the hichest vel, and may still offer some cushion effect for the piston. |

Why would you go bigger than 1/8" if the available data says there is no advantage, and you could possibly do damage to the piston / seal?....
In addition, how is the data for a Beeman R1 (HW80) relevant as it has a much larger swept volume than a Phantom.... and could therefore use a bigger transfer port efficiently?....

Why go bigger than 1/8", umm, i'm not. I said it looks like 1/8" is ideal and the stock 0.103" may be a std midrange size intended for both .177 and .22
Re the Beeman R1: Well, its just talk and experimentation. I read online that someone gained about 100fps drilling a Phantom out to 1/8"
I am fully aware that it "might" have negative effects on the internals...
But all in good fun |

Slavia knows what he is talking about and I second it.
I too have read posts on other forums about enlarging the transfer port in a .177 cal. Quest/Phantom. Most of those posts were authored by self serving boneheads and bullshitters.
However, if you want to limit your pellet selection to 10 grains or heavier with reduced velocity, a high arch trajectory and a POA - POI range of only a few feet, by all means have at it.
On the other hand, if you would rather not waste time reinventing the wheel of airguning and enable yourself to discern the wheat from the chaff:
www.amazon.co.uk/Airgun-Trigger-Target-G-V-Cardew/dp/0950510823/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210277905&sr=1-1
The Amazon site always seems to indicate they are temporarily out of stock, but order it anyway. You will probably have it within 30 days and your CC Co. will handle the exchange rate.
Todays U.S. dollar to British Pound rate is 1 Pound = $1.5857 U.S. dollar.
Don't forget to put U.S.A at the bottom of your address.
Happy airgunning,

| Go down to the public library and ask them to find the title you want through interlibrary loan. The copy I borrowed came from Seattle. It's free. |
