The rifle is a Beeman GS 950 in .22, made by Norica in Spain. It has never shot as good as I thought it should, but though maybe it was just me. Not long ago however, I happened to look down the barrrel from the muzzle end instead of the breech end and got a nasty surprise. There are some bad machine marks in the rifleing right near the muzzle. No replacement parts available, so that leaves me with cutting the barrel down.

So yesterday, I set down with several pellet styles and my chrono, and ran a velocity/accuracy baseline. Last night I pulled the barrel, and this morning I heated the muzzle brake up to make the loctite let go and removed the brake. I got another nasty suprise. The rifling right at the muzzle, the last .125' or so, is absolutely horrible. It is washed out, nonexistent on one side. I couldn't see that part of it when it was down inside the muzzle brake, but can see it very well with it off. Taking 1/2" to 3/4" off and recrowning should get 98% of the bad stuff. So, here in a little while I'm going to chuck it up in the lathe and see what I can do with it. The barrel is not quite 18" right now, it will probably end up about 17" when I am done. I cannot see how it could possible shoot any worse when I am done. I think it should be light years better. I wish I had a way to post pics of the rifling, but I don't think I can make my camera take a shot that close.

With slanted/non-existent rifling on the end of the barrel, you're probably right that there's not much chance of making it any worse. If you can get pictures, that would be great.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Okay, it's a done deal. It cut down real well. I was very suprised at how soft the barrel actually was. Had to use a very sharp tool and be real careful to keep it cutting smooth. I put a recessed target style crown back on it, since I am not sure if I am going to put the muzzle brake back on it or not. I will probably try it both ways. I also lapped the crown just a touch to break off what little burr was there from machining.

Looking at the end of the barrel is night and day difference now. I really don't see how it can't shoot a whole bunch better, unless the barrel is not the limiting factor on this gun. The piece I cut off was really bad. Barrel length went from 17 13/16" to 17 1/32", so just a touch over 3/4" came off it. I am going to re-chrono it when I re-test for accuracy and see how much it dropped velocity. I am very interested in that also. It may be tomorrow night or even later this week before I can really test it again.

I may can get some pics, I will try.

Spanish air rifles are known for their usage of low quality steel. No suprise there, really... Neutral

Okay, here is a pic of the re-crown and the piece I cut off. I have never seen a muzzle rounded over the way that one was from the factory. Of course, it was hidden under the muzzle brake and you had to be pretty determined to get a look at it... But anyways, you can see how the rifleing was washed out on the end of the factory muzzle. The shiny part you can see is where the rifling button didn't even touch the inside of the bore where it was drilled. It is nice and sharp and crisp now. The last .125" was really bad most of the way around, then back up inside about .5" were some more. It is all gone now.

No word on how it shoots yet. My wife had a hospital board meeting last night so I didn't get it back together untill well after dark when the little one (18 months) went to bed. I have an awards ceremony for my oldest son tonight (he is a junior in HS) so I probably won't get to shoot tonight either. May be able to slip out at lunch for a quick test, if I do I'll let ya'll know. Will probably be this weekend before I do an in-depth test. I am very optomistic though. Mr. Green

Looks nice and shiney. I might get a re-crown on my QB too, along with a thread for a silencer. (Silencers for airguns are allowed in the Netherlands.)

Well, it does shoot better. How much, I don't know yet. I did get to shoot it some last night but the wind was whipping pretty bad and I know I could have done better. But, it seemed to be printing 10 shot groups about the same size as it used to do 3 shot groups, so consistency has improved and the wild flyers have been much reduced. And it did shoot one sub 1/2" five shot group right at the end. Maybe it needs some more shots to settle in. After all, I did clean the barrel to make sure I got all the trash out of it from machining.

Bad news is that I think I have a scope problem. I have run out of vertical adjustment (down) and the adjsutments are acting real flaky out there on the end of the travel. I shimmed it some last night and it helped, but didn't seem to really cure the problem. So, I have two options. My dad has a new centerpoint scope coming in this week, maybe I can borrow it for an evening before he puts it on his RWS. Second, I can take mine off and put it on my 10/22 to test it. If there is a problem it will definitely show up on that gun, it will shoot right around .250 @ 25yds. I really don't want to mess with the 10/22, I have it dailed in just where I want it...

It depends, your mount may be off or something. Are you shooting high or low?

You may need to shim the front so your scope is aiming higher.

i cut and crowned a qb 78 barrel with good results...i did not chrono but the accuracy did not suffer. i did an internal valve job on it, too. that was the biggest improvment of all.

Ssshhhh! Alstone cut a QB78 barrel down, and down, and down until he was left with a little midget thing that wouldn't shoot worth a damn. Actually, I exaggerate, but Al was having issues with bent and poorly machines QB barrels- even replacements he ordered were crap out-of-the-box.

i believe the barrel band has to do with accuracy, too. i repalced the standard one with the a rigid alum machined one that reduced/eliminated the 'flex' in the barrel mounting.

The Deluxe barrels might be better. Neutral

Shorting barrels seems to be the fad of the minute..
every forum there seems to be one or two hacking bits of there barrel...
But they do say a G1 shoots way better with a 14.5" barrel...
