What's the view on gently polishing the chamber entrance to facilitate pellet seating without shaving lead or deforming skirts?

I've done it, using the same technique as for polishing muzzle crowns. I didn't notice much difference before/after, but it didn't hurt. I suppose it depends on how bad the breech crown is to begin with.

I would think that should help... slightly. Doesn't sound worth doing on anything but match rifles.

All rifles are match rifles in that we want every available bit of accuracy we can get from them. If a rifle is only capable of 4" groups at a certain distance, you can bet that I'm constantly trying to get 3 1/2" out of it.

Then it might be a good idea to insure the pellet skirt seats/seals evenly on the breech.
This is why some shooters use a seating tool. |

Doctor, the patient is too far gone to cure. We'll just have to make him comfortable.
Your homework assignment for tonight is to read this:

Slavia, many thanks for the tips. And you're right, the patient is too far gone to cure. I've been shooting in one form or another for as far back as I can remember. Once in the far distant past, I was 50-yard offhand state blackpowder champ. Used to be a big-time varmint hunter, also. Time and health have conspired to rob me of most hunting experiences these days, but I still shoot in the backyard, and keep the blackbirds off the wife's birdfeeders. This seems to be an excellent forum. Thanks to all who have volunteered their help, and I can probably offer some tips of my own from time to time.

I've crowned the breech on my 2 phantoms and on my qb78. Made noticable improvments on the .22 phantom and on the qb. I'd recommend it, at least on the cheaper guns as it surely cant hurt as long as you dont over do it.
