To start, I'm a newb, and i'm also Canadian and we've got strict laws up here concerning 'firearms'. So please keep your gun(g)-ho (pardon the pun) gun law opinions to yourselves Smile.

So here's my situation: After discovering my inner marksman with a friends air rifle, ive decided I want my own. Now I want a rifle that shoots 1000fps, however Canadian law requires a license for rifles shooting over 500fps. So, what I would like to do is import a 500fps rifle and change the spring. My question to you savvy gun enthusiasts is two fold.

1. Is this possible, and if so, is it simple enough for a newbie like me to do it.

2. what rifle or brand of rifle(s) is recommended for this, and where can I find information concerning spring sizes/pressure/force that type of thing.

Thanks for your help guys !

The first thing is to get a spring compresser....A Tee bar clamp will work
just pad it to stop scratchs etc.....
For parts....go to J Macarri's site... www.airguns.citymax.com
springs/seals/lubes......
Pick a common gun...Gamo / Crosman..

Spring rate calc.... www.pontiacracing.net/js_coil_spring_rate.htm

I don't think you should do what I think you're thinking of. If that makes any sense.

Here's how I think you want to do this: 1) buy 500fps gun. 2) put 1000fps spring in it. 3) claim it as a 500fps "airgun". Do not do that, it's just stupid.

Now if you mean to buy a more powerful gun and put a weaker spring in it, then we can help you out.

Welcome to the forum, fleetone. My advice would be to start legal and stay legal.

welcome to the forum!!! i have to agree with the others, stay legal..... now if you want to this project just to tinker... give it a good tune.... same procedures, and youll end up with a much smoother sweeter shooting rifle.

at the track we have a saying.. "smooth = fast".... i think that can be amended to apply to AGs .... smooth = accurate

no this is my first post... and to all of you who want me to 'keep it legal' , I respect your opinions, and believe me, I understand the consequences of what i'm asking... And to be honest, I really don't think it's a big deal, it's only an air rifle after all. So if anyone else has some encouraging advice i'd love to hear it. If it makes you feel any better, why don't we see this is a hypothetical situation... and if someone were to hypothetically change the spring on their rifle, how would they do it?

A quick how to do........
1 / remove the stock.....
2 / remove the trigger unit,,"depends on gun type & make"
Gamo/Crosman, Slide trigg unit rearward and lift out, oppiste
to replace but hold sear up while inserting.....
3 / put in spring compresser & take the spring pressure off the
end cap & punch/pusn cross retaining pin out.....
4 / wined spring compresser off & end plug /spring will come out
as you wined compresser....
5 / then remove parts,,, rear plug guide assembly / spring /
top hat "front guide" / piston....

realy all very easy...spring guns are very simple/////

Welcome to the forum.

As you can see, we all follow the law to the very end. Shocked Laughing Rolling Eyes

But, why not get the license and buy the 1000fps gun?

A 1000 Fps rifle isn't just an air rifle. Especially spring powered, you will get a hard time getting used to it. On top of that, 1000 Fps can be dangerous. Apart from the fact that they're legal or not, you don't want to hit someone in the face with a 1000 Fps rifle.

Then, of course, there's the whole idea that 1000 Fps is often just advertising. A lot of rifles can do 1000 Fps with pellets that are light enough, but you'll smash your piston seal to pieces.

To be honest, and I'm going to get hurt by saying this, there is a brand that has rifles that hardly ever break down. You can throw a Gamo out of the window, loaded and cocked with the safety on, and it won't easily go off. Neutral I hate myself. Mr. Green

The Genesis is NOT the same platform as the Quest/Phantom/G1/Tac-1- it is the older platform Crosman used before going with the B18/19 setup. The only other rifle that uses it other than the Genesis that is still available at the moment if the Tac77 Elite. The Benjamin "Legend" (now discontinued) and a couple other models also used it in the past.

It is VERY similar and all the same principals apply- so any pictures would be useful for anyone wanting to get a better idea of how/what is involved in taking down a springer and the sorts of bits/pieces inside.
