Is there any reason a delrin spring guide is better than 1 from good steel.
i understand the delrin would have a little more damping effect on the action. but would a properly lubed steel guide otherwise perform as well.
both would be "made to fit". the steel could be made hollow to reduce wieght.
somewhere i had seen a tuneshop use steel, while talk is always of delrin.
i'm getting ready to finally do internal work to my RS2.
it''s finaly settling down after about 2k worth of pellets.
i have ready access to good steel, and would need to purchase the delrin.

Delrin is most likely mentioned all the time because it's easy to work with. Even someone with a very basic set of hand tools can make parts out of Delrin, whereas steel can be more of a job to get done properly.
Another issue, as you mention, is the weight. Delrin is lighter than aluminum, so it wouldn't effect the rifle mechanics in any significant manner.
I guess there's one way to find out how well steel will work- try it! |

If yer want to use a nylon..."delrin"....
Use "Tyvar" its a PTFE...Its so slippery yer can't file it..
if useing a lathe make yer last cut big...as yer
can't / hard to take anything under .2mm off
just to slipprey and the tool won't bite..just
rolls over it....its as slick as a wet XXXXX
Has a very high oil content and is self lubeing..
But don't try and make a nylon guide with out a steel
internal shaft as the side load of a compressed spring
can cause it to brake...nylon sleave over a steel guide. |

Delrin is ok to make spring guides out of and like Eric says it’s easy to work with, but it does have some drawback's it wears out quicker than steel, it bends and will not stop spring harmonics, it doesn’t like lubricant’s and if you use a lube it will wear quicker, and lastly putting in a light weight delrin spring guide where it normally sits behind the spring and piston, doesn’t help to counter the weight of the spring and piston, where as a heavy steel guide will.
So take your pick

i can see on my piston seal that ive had some combustion.
just a little discoloration, but i'd like to replace it while i've got it apart.

OK. all together. about 50-60 pellets thru it.
i bought some daisy's to run thru it and break it in a little.
my pyramid order. FTS and Predators came today.
i couldnt find a slightly thicker brech seal, so i shimmed the existing one.
just a little. after the shimming, i needed to resight.
i took it apart, put it back together, and adjusted the scope about 2 clicks to be on. before shimming. gotta like that.
i think at about 100-150 pellets, i'm gonna open and up and evaluate my lube job.
after the internal work, and the shim job, it definitly feels better.
accuracy seems about the same, at the moment. maybe a little better.
i can tell it needs a little more tar. i tried to go sparingly. i wanna see how the new peices are wearing first.
i like this gun. |

Holy moly,
i took it back apart and replaced the washers w/ ones a little bigger.
added more tar. cleaned up some excess moly.
this is a different gun now. almost a thud.
shootin' sweet.
