Here’s the Latest incarnation of my QB-78, I bought it two years ago and to be honest I also thought it was a heap of junk, It was as rough as a badgers ar$e, and just sprayed pellets anywhere it fancied, so after spending a lot of time cleaning, polishing and chopping 3 inches off the barrel to get rid of bad rifling, things improved and it started to group pellets.
Just over a year ago I bought a TX200HC and this took my mind off the QB, in fact so much so that I hardly used it over the last year, at one point in an effort to improve it I bought a new barrel and valve tube from Archer Air Guns in the States, but all the new barrel managed to do was an impression of a Gatling gun, and spray pellets in any direction, with closer examination of the new barrel I found out that the hole didn’t come out in the centre of the barrel, but toward the side, and the scope run out of adjustment trying to align it. So it was put away and it was back to the TX.
Anyway over the winter looking for something to do I dug it out and striped it down, went through everything and added a power adjuster and a covered breach also I put back the old barrel. I had an old Hawke Air max scope that had a broken reticule so I sent it back to Hawke for exchange under their 10 year guarantee and low and behold by return of post a brand spanking new scope arrived, this was added to the QB and testing began.
Thing’s were no better apart from the noise as I had increased the power, so to fit a new silencer I threaded the barrel but before doing this I chopped off an inch where a grub screw had damaged it, finished it off and put the silencer on, and back to testing again, Well I couldn’t believe it hole on hole at 20m, so two years down the line and it finally came good and all it needed was another inch off the barrel!

The thing is, Al, I might need to get one myself. I'm going teach a few of my friends the basics of shooting, as some of those guys were pretty interested in this hobby. I'd get the deluxe version though. Still rought, but has some shiney parts. Then maybe make a stock for it.
I got trouble channeling the thing I want. I want a BSA Lightning XL, a new PC, travel, and a QB78... |

You got me going there for a minute Jonathan, I thought I hadn't posted it.
Anyway have a look here:

I have another mod to do on it yet which involves locking the adjuster.

Ahh, I think I remember that post now........bad memory
How much variance does that give you in velocity? I am very close to running my QB on HPA and want to be able to go from moderate to "Monster" when I feel like it |

Unfortunately with shorting the barrel I have more gas than barrel, so the adjuster is handy to cut down excess gas and give more good shots, it doesn’t appear to increase the power above the maximum that I had before.
I think you would have to get the maximum output by improving the valve and use the adjuster to cut it down to what you require. My QB outputs maximum of 750fps but using the adjuster I can cut it down to about 350-400 fps, this is depending upon the air temperature.

I'd want mine in .22, but I went ahead and got me a .177 QB78. |
