Just have a customer with an expensive gun that I can't afford... Custom stuff... I have at least another 4-6 weeks of production till I can start taking custom orders again.

Good and bad... I have no one who can pick up the customs to reffer them too in the meantime. But I am keeping busy...

Duh... Hi Brian... Don't I feel silly... Mr. Green

Damn it Joe! I wish I had your luck. I'm pulling my hair out with a major case of cabin fever. Only time I get out of the house is to go shopping a few blocks away, or to take mom for her appointments. I'd love to have a side buisness like you have! At least until I get enough $$$ together to set up my foundry and get some more welding equipment.

I just need to run down to my tool guy... It's an odd one that I don't have. My chart is down in the shop and I quit arround 6 tonight. I have been pushing too hard and my body does not like it...

I can not wait to get my mill... Then the Disco and CFX brakes will be a snap along with some other parts I plan on making...

Heh, I know the feeling Joe. I would offer to take your custom work if I had time for it. As it is, I have three or four custom jobs that keep getting delayed because I'm trying to ramp up production of other parts.

That reminds me. I have the code written for the bands that you asked me for. Haven't had time to test it yet though. . .

I have mixed feelings about custom work. It's definitely interesting. . . I almost always lose money on it though.

$60 + shipping, seems reasonable? Maybe a little bit overpriced?
The M12x1 tap was $56 (it was the only one I could find in Canada) + shipping. $2.50 worth of Aluminum and $7.50 worth of Delrin (I tried it 3x in Delrin. He stripped the threads, then I smartened up and did it in Al). Oh, and 3x $12 for shipping.
I lost my shirt on that brake.
I only have to do 3 more of them to break even (this does not account for the spin index or the 5C collet to hold the work, the mill, tooling, power or my time (109 holes takes a little under 2 hours to drill with the mill, every 6-7 minutes I have to rotate it 40*).

So, if you know anybody that wants a brake that screws directly onto the end of a Drozd (Baikal MP661K) in place of the barrel nut (or whatever it's called). . .

I'm going to tell you the same thing I was told when I firest got into the A/C business. People are willing to pay for what they can't do. You have special skills, and they don't. There fore you need to collect on thos skills. People percieve quality as expensive. If you undeercut yourself, then you are basically giving away that money that is laying on the table for you to pick up. Figure out an hourly rate and charge for it. Figure out what your price is per hour, not per job. You took the tyime and effort to learn how to do this kind of work, so you should be reimbursed for that time. I'd say 60 is a little low myself. You have to figure in setuptime, and wear and tear on your tools. Don't sell yourself short man.

Ok, so, about 15 years ago, there was this local band. They were amazing. Even their cover tunes sounded original. The problem was, they played for beer. No cover charge, no cash, just pick up the bar tab and they would come and play, pack the joint and go home smashed. It didn't take long for the local bar owners to stop paying bands to play in their establishments. They pretty much killed the music scene around here. . .

The same thing is happening in the airgun parts market, especially at the lower end (ie. Crosman). One machinist in particular severely undercharges for his work. Consequently, the majority of the buying public expects parts to be ridiculously underpriced.

Case in point, I have a repeat customer in the US who wants me to build a PCP field target pistol for him. He's prepared to spend a couple of hundred dollars for the tube and guts and then bolt his own grip frame, breech and barrel up to it.
I can't find a high pressure pump to test it with for less than he is willing to pay for the finished product. So his project is sidelined until: a) I get a smokin' deal on a pump or b) he becomes willing to part with the funds necessary for me to make money instead of losing money on the project.
And considering the liability that I would be setting myself up for if he uses it incorrectly. . . I don't even want to go there. . .

There is a certain segment of the market that will pay for quality. I like them :D they tend to come back for more :D With the current economic "crisis" that segment is shrinking.

BTW I'm a hack, I've only been doing this for a little over a year (been in business 11 months now). Shop class was a long time ago and I'm relearning this stuff the hard way. By all accounts, I do good work. I could never charge what my hourly rate would require though.
An example: I had a customer early on who wanted a custom MSP based off of the Crosman 2240 valve. I sourced materials, decrypted his (electronic equivalent of a crayola on napkin) concept sketch, figured out critical dimensions, tolerances etc. I poured at least 100 hours into the project, scratch built everything except the rear half of the valve. . . in the end, after materials were paid for. I made a little over $2/hour and he had the unmitigated gall to (female dog) about the price and withheld the "performance bonus" (for exceeding an arbitrary and almost unrealistic goal) for 6 months.
He is now on the undesirable end of my sliding price scale.

This is a tough gig to be successful in. . .

At the end of the day though. . . this is the best job I've ever had :D
