I carry an air pistol in my holster for close-up work when I have just wounded an animal. It's only a single shot too, but from about 3 ft away a 2240 has plenty of killing power. Oddly enough, it would be legal for me to carry a powder burning handgun as a sidearm, as long as it was rim-fire or a muzzleloader. It would also be legal for me to carry two full sized air rifles... There's no county or state rules about airgun hunting anyway. Just in town. I haven't used it, but I thought a 2240 would be ok for squirrel...I'll have to recheck. I've got a new RWS 850 I would like to try...given a chance next year. For squirrels I basically wait and watch a bird feeder in my back yard from my attic window. If I don't see to much action, I've few calls that I use. One is a round disk with a hole through it, by sucking air through sapposedly makes the sound of a baby squirrel in distress. Haven't had much luck with that one. The other looks like a duck call. Has a soft rubber end, a clear plastic tube with a hole through the side. By placing a finger over the open end of the plastic tub and squeezing the rubber end, makes a chirp of sorts. Drives ever squirrel within hearing range nuts! (few dogs too!) Are there any calls for rabbits? When I asked if "air pistols" or "air shotguns" were legal, I was told "no, as it's writen, only air rifles are covered". There is no clear definition of when an air pistol becomes an air rifle. Like, if I took a Crosman air pistol and put a shoulder stock on it, does it become an air rifle? The only law on what makes a rifle and what makes a shotgun is TCA 39-17-1302, but that only applies to powder burners. However, if you go by those guidelines, if your air pistol has a barrel length of at least 16" and an overall length of at least 26", you could use it as a sidearm since it would meet the length requirements specified for powder burning rifles. It would be impossible to argue that it wasn't an "air rifle". They could have avoided this "loop hole" by changing the wording in the guide from "air rifles" to "air guns" as being legal for small game. Most of those around here are too prissy to get their boots muddy. And since my mother in law has me down as caretaker on the property I can pretty much do anything that doesn't break state or federal law. I do hope to do something with dynamic shooting that also requires a sidearm. I still would need a lot of space to actually start this up, but I guess it should be rather cool to get something like that off the ground.
