I am told that .22 is a more "efficient" pellet when using co2 than .177. What does this mean, and how does it work?

Efficient in what way? amount of shots, FPE, or range? I know my 2300 hits harder than my buddy's 1760. I knock squirrels down a lot easier with mine than he does with his, and we both have the same length barrel.

I think it depends on what you mean by "efficiency".... If you mean which caliber can delivery the most FPE (in a single shot) from a given platform, then the larger the better (within reason) for the reason SinNC states (base area of the pellet)....
However, if you mean which can extract the most energy from a CO2 cartridge, I would beg to differ.... I've managed to wring out 609 FPE from 12 grams of CO2 in my 1750.... the best I've seen from SinNC in .22 cal is 516.... unless of course my info is out of date....

Same answer here...depends what you intend to do with the rifle and how much power the given gun generates. I tend to pretty much go with .22 by default, but some of that is prejudice. I'm on the back side of 55 and started out with airguns when .177 wasn't around. For hunting I'd always pretty much go with the haevier pellet (I have 2 .25 calibor rifles). Still if you have a high power .177 you can go with say a Crow Magnum at 8.8 grains or even a Kodiak or a Kodiak extra heavy at 10.6+ grains. Stick with a domed or a hollow point will probably do the job without the "punch through" problem that a high speed .177 can have. The right gun and pellet for the right job.
