Crosman has two different valves used in the 22xx/17xx Co2 guns:
#2250-003 used in the 2240, 2250, 2260, 1740, etc.:

And a different valve used in the 2300S and 2300T pistols:

There are some internal differences between the parts used (as noted in the diagrams), and if you push on the valvestem/pin the 2300 unit is much lighter/softer than the 2240 unit. Beyond that, the exterior of both valves are identical in size, shape, holes and so on. Anyone know what this is all about?
As the 2300's are rated at "up to 520fps" and the 2240's at "up to 460fps", is any of this 'in' the valve? The longer barrel on the 2300's (10.1") vs. the 2240s (7.5") should account for this I would think- if we look at the 2250 it is rated at "up to 550fps" using the 2240-type valve, which only seems to confirm the power increase is only coming from the barrel length increase.
Anyone know what the real differences are between these two valves and the overall effect/purpose? |

| Well, Between my 2240 and 2300 custom rifle there was a big difference in volume. My 2240 is much louder than my 2300 custom rifle, and it makes a larger hole in the CO2 cartridge. I haven't cronied either one so I am not sure what difference it makes in the velocity. |

What is a 2300 "custom rifle"? I thought all the Crosman Custom Shop guns were labelled as "2400" series units?
Are both your 2240 and 2300 of basically the same configuration- ie. same barrel length on both? |

| Well, mine was built right when they first started before the 2300t and the 2300 s. It' has on the side 2300 custom crosman. I'm trying to take a picture of it, but I can't get my camera to set up right. But you are right, now they call them 2400's. And the 2400 has the longest barrel you can get while my 2240 has the factory barrel. But the pistol seems a lot louder and here's the clincher. I get 35 shots out of my pistol before it runs out of gas, and I only get 20 out of my rifle. |

From what I have heard the difference between the valve is:
2300 valve=volume reduced for higher shot count
They put a sleeve in it but if you remove the sleeve I am not sure if there is a difference between the valve body... if you look at the exploded diagram you see that the valve body share the same number.so it should be the same.

That may be it- that sleeve doesn't seem to serve any other purpose that I can determine. The valve spring is also a fair bit weaker on the 2300 unit.
When I have some time I may have to find out the "hard way" by chronying a stock 2240, changing the valve and testing again... |

I would guess that this part: 11D 2300-037 Spacer
is just to reduce the volume inside the valve, which should increase shot count....
You say that the stem is easier to push on a 2300 valve?.... the spring is the SAME part number....
Is it possible that this part: 11F 2250-020 Stem Guide Assy.
is drilled further (than the 2250 part # 2250-011) where the spring seats to reduce the preload on the spring?.... just a guess....

Bob- you are likely correct, pardon my mis-statement there. The valve pin requires literally half the force to seat it fully on the 2300 valve (vs. the 2240 valve).
I'd have this thing apart already if it weren't for the fact that I'd be using a vice and channel locks which I don't suppose is going to do much for the casing on the poor valve. Lately I've somehow been inclined to 'overdo' things and cause myself more problems (maybe it's the cold or something). Got a good tip on how to separate the valve pieces without dinking it all up? |

I've always had luck with a vise, channel locks and two pieces of thick rubber. I believe I've only had one valve that didn't open easily that way. No marks with the rubber.

| Maybe I should find some decent cushioning like rubber- traditionally I've used cotton cloths wadded up a bit, but lately thing must be put together alot tighter as I've been ripping the cloths more frequently and occasionally leaving marks. Well- I'll find out sometime tonight or tomorrow... |

Cut two pieces of metal tubing that will just slide over the valve.... split it so that it can collapse tight.... and then go crazy with curved-jaw vice-grips....

Well, I used a couple pieces of old garden hose to hold the pieces. Worked out OK, but it appears the threads on the 2300 valve were less than stellar, thus why the issue getting it apart. 2240 valve came apart immediately with no problems.
Anyways, the 2300 has a spacer and a different pin (notice the longer shoulder/stop on it) and the spring, despite the Crosman parts diagram listing the same number in both valves, is completely different between the two valves- the 2300 spring is indeed a fair bit weaker- and it takes longer to bind than does the 2240 unit (as in the valve pin can be pushed further in on the 2300 unit before the spring coil binds) despite the longer extension which one might assume is there to limit the pin's travel.

HI Eric....
My guess is that the longer spring guide on the 2300 exhaust valve is to take up volume inside the valve, same as the spacer.... is the valve otherwise identical?.... length, diameters (stem & OD), etc.... Also, is there any difference in the front end (where the piercing pin rides in).... depth of hole inside, number of threads, etc.... Also what is the ID, OD, and length of the spacer?....
If you have one kicking around, could you check and see if the valve spring from a 2200 is the same as the 2240?.... they have the same part number (788-061).... maybe you could compare wire size (0.042"?), number of turns, length, etc?....
Also, it would help if you could measure the wire size and number of turns for the one from the 2300....
My guess is it would be impossible to get a spring for the 2300 if the part number is not unique.... perhaps it's the same as a sear spring?....

Same number of threads on the valve "nose".
Valve pins the same diameter and length, but the 2300 valve "platform" is 14.88mm in length, the 2240/50 valve is 12.17mm (the brass part on the pin).
The 2300's spacer is 9.93mm long, 13.3mm OD, 11.04mm ID
The 2300 spring has 9 coils, 23.7mm uncompressed length, wire thickness of 0.84mm. The 2240 spring has 7 coils, is 19.3mm uncompressed, wire thickness of 1.11mm.
Based on my "finger test" the 2300 spring takes something less than half the force to compress 50% than does the 2240 spring. I have no way of testing this accurately, however.
Unfortunately, I do not have a 2200 valve spring laying around, but the one from a newer aluminum 1322/2289 valve is significantly longer/tighter than either of them (12 coils, wire thickness of 1.24mm). |

I assume when you say the valve pins are the same diameter, you mean the outside diameter of the seat section (the largest OD of the brass part?).... I made a spacer to your dimensions (actually I used a 7/16" drill for the ID, which is 0.003" larger).... and the valve nearly fills the hole in the spacer.... there is only a 0.007" gap for the CO2 to pass around the valve to get to the exhaust port....
The diameter I get for the 2240 valve OD is 0.426" or 10.82mm.... If the 2300 one is the same, it has VERY little room for the CO2 to move from the main chamber past the valve to get to the exhaust port.... perhaps they intend the gun to only use the tiny amount of gas that is already behind the valve, around the port?.... If so, I am in awe of how little CO2 is actually required to get ~500 fps....
I'd really appreciate it if you could confirm the maximum OD of the 2300 valve stem (brass part)....
