The Gamo Hunter Extreme .22 - the fastest .22 air rifle on the planet at 1300 FPS with PBA ammunition. Muzzle energy of 23.6 ft-lbs per second (32 Joules/sec). Able to kill wild boars, or they wouldn't put the picture in there. I'm a believer.

I think the top of the line models from Gamo are made in England, what a shame. Now I will feel filthy when I buy a BSA...

Seems Gamo is doing it's own thing allright.

I sat around their SHOT show booth for over 1/2 hour, finally got someone to go look for a salesman/parts guy to determine how they would be for supplying parts- nobody ever came back to answer the question.

Ended up talking with someone who, perhaps somewhat inadvertantly, confirmed what we all already know- the average consumer sees these sorts of silly things, doesn't know any better and buys based purely on the marketing- thus Gamo gets big sales (and hopefully doesn't turn people off airgunning ultimately as a result).

Frankly, it's tough to avoid buying a Gamo in some places- I was at the Orlando Bass Pro Shop, a couple different WalMarts, a Sports Authority and I believe some other retailer (which one escapes me right now)- they all had Gamos piled up on the shelf, and with those loud colorful boxes, they are hard to avoid.

Let me see if I'm getting this right;

-A Watt is the rate at which work is done when an object is moving at one meter per second against a force of one Newton.
- A Watt is equal to one Joule per second and measures a rate of energy conversion.

So, what they are trying to show is how efficiently the rifle transfers energy to the pellet? Or are they trying to show how efficiently the pellet transfers energy to the target?

How many Joules per second do I need to kill wild boar with a .177 caliber? If my rifle generates enough Joules and Watts, can it power a light bulb while I shoot?

I think all this is just engineering filler to market their products. If you need Wikipedia just to figure out what they mean, it's probably too much information and probably useless. I mean, how do we even know the number of Joules per second they advertise is even a good thing? What do we have that we can compare it to?

I guess you can compare it to my Beeman;
1000 fps, pellet weight of 9.6 grains = 21.3 ft lbs
21.3 ft lbs = 28.9 Joules per second (or Watts).
That also means it generates 98.5 Btu's per hour and burns 24.8 kilocalories per hour. And guess what, that doesn't tell you a darn thing about the real world performance of the rifle.

in conclusion, it penetrates 2.5 inches of squirrel at 30 yards. I hate math. Razz

I have a Gamo Stutzen, not a bad rifle, I like it a lot. That being said, Gamo needs to look seriously at their marketing dept. There isn't any such thing as "ft. pounds/per second", you're right. And I'd think Gamo would bury any reference to a boar as deeply as they could after that fiasco.

The shame is that even though they have ticked a lot of shooters off and some realy hate Gamo, they can build a descent mid-priced rifle...not the best but for $100, $150 they make a rifle you can use on squirrel or rabbit with a tolerable trigger etc. I don't hate them, I just wish they'd try a different...tone.

I can understand why they keep using the boar reference though, to bury it would mean that they would have to admit that it was foolish to try to convince people that a .177 air rifle (as in the video) or even a .22 air rifle would ever be a passable hog hunting gun for the average guy who doesn't have a strong pack of good bay dogs. It was just irresponsible.

You are right that they do make some good products. I used to own a Gamo Shadow 1000, and it was a good rifle... Until I was at my friend's house one day and his wife got mad at him for something and she grabbed my rifle (thinking it was his) and threw it out the second story window Shocked

. The old Shadow was a tough gun, but not tough enough to survive that one. And I've been very happy with the results I've gotten with the Gamo Rocket pellets.

Well, sadly, some people do think that boar shooting ordeal was A-OK. A gentleman I met recently who fancies himself the world's greatest trapper or somesuch had no qualms about telling how he would, in a heartbeat, shoot a full size whitetail deer with a .177 pellet and the Gamo boar-shooting activity was completely appropriate.

After pausing and considering if this guy was serious, I suggested that maybe the most expert of marksmen might attempt this and rely on exact shot placement- ie. a shot through the eye socket straight into the brain?

Nope- that wasn't the issue at all. The idea was that, basically, "sh!t happens" while hunting and going down clean isn't a pre-requisite in his ethical structure.

While we can probably admit- not every shot is going to result in a nice, tidy, clean kill- but to totally disregard the idea of trying to accomplish this seems to fly in the face of common sense and decency. Guys like this will/do give hunting a very very bad name. Hopefully they are a dying breed.

At the time I chose not to pursue the conversation with this guy any further- he did appear to know a few people in the airgun world (manufacturers)- although looking back, this may only be by the fact he's an older guy who may have tried on numerous occasions to sell product (based on what I've seen- unsuccessfully) to some of these same manufacturers. Looking back, maybe I should have flat-out told the guy he was full of sh!t.

Sadly, this conversation took place right inside the Gamo booth at the SHOT show last week while I was waiting for someone from Gamo to actually give a crap about seeing why I'd been standing around for half-an-hour waiting for them.

The whole experience, from being jerked off by Gamo, to a conversation bordering on mental deficiency in respect to hunting was extremely negative.

Sadly, every time I get anywhere near anything Gamo-related, I feel 'unclean' by the time I walk away. Perhaps this should be enough to discourage any more ideas of mine to deal with them or their products...

And that's why we have strict hunting regulations. Out of all hunters, most are morons who aren't worth calling hunters. <- propbably a bit of an exaggeration.
