New member, 1st post. Just bought an RWS 54, .22 caliber with BSA 2-7x32 scope. I'm not sure at what distance to sight it in. I've done a lot of shooting in my 52 yrs from slingshots up to 81mm mortars. Don't have much experience with pellet rifles and NO experience with a pellet rifle this serious. Got the gun from a relative, not broken in yet for a good price. I didn't receive a manual with it. I know how to cock and shoot it and CAN sight in and hit with it. I just need to know what range these guns should be sighted in at. Any help is greatly appreciated. I sighted my Gamo Viper in at 40 yards and shoot a 1 1/4" pattern I've only shot 300 rounds and they tell me it will get better with more use. I found "Gamo Rockets" pellets shoot the best. I plugged that into the ChairGun2 ballistics program and it says a 32 yard zero would give you plus or minus 1/4" trajectory out to 35 yards.... If you can stand a bigger kill-zone, then a 37 yard zero will give you plus or minus 1/2" out to 42 yards.... both are assuming a round nosed pellet such as a JSB Exact with a good ballistics coefficient.... The 32 yard zero trajectory will also cross the POA at 15 yards, BTW....and give you a "point blank hold" from 11 to 35 yards, plus or minus 1/4".... U.S.A. Thanks a lot for the feedback. Would love to go outside and see what I could do with it. I just have this thing about temperatures. I don't like cold weather. Well, part of it is dislike and the other part is my damaged old body. The aches and pains are a lot worse in the cold. Of course when I say cold, I'm not talking about really cold- just cold to me. It was 29 when I got up this morning. It's up to 47 now. I'm hard-headed so I might go out there anyway. I'd like to try shooting some distance shots. I have about 750 feet in my driveway before it makes a 90 degree turn so could set up some looong shots. My car is broke down so I had to make a 2 mile RT walk to the hardware store this morning for a couple of boaring bits... I left just before the sun peeked over the horizon. It was 30* when I left and 35* when I got back... I still managed to work up a sweat... It is all up hill to the store... But... I got orders to fill. I hope it'll prove itself good, the anti-recoil system is known to kill some scopes, and I've read a few times it can break down. It should be great up to a 100 yards for plinking, probably up to 50 for hunting I recon. U.S.A. The scope seems to be a nice one. I hope the gun doesn't "do it in". Time will tell. I know the first time I read that an air rifle would hurt a scope, I was dumb-founded. Having experience with cartridge guns, and some pretty large, I couldn't see how an air rifle could hurt. After reading/educating myself, plus the fact that I'm mechanical, I understand. The scope is an "air rifle" scope, so I'll keep my fingers crossed (like that'll do any good with my kind of luck ). Well, it's bed-time for us old folks. I think that scope trouble often has a lot to do with the fact that people didn't read in on the subject. Well, I can't leave anything alone. What kind of mods. can be performed on the "54"? Also, wind kept me from shooting yesterday. It was colder than I like, but I was ready to face it. Once I got outside and saw what the wind was doing, I retreated to the TV. I've got to go to town today and run some errands. When I get home, I plan to shoot (if the wind cooperates).
