The birds have found a new spot in the yard which is harder to get shots at since it forces me to open my window all the way in order to get a clear opening at them. But then again, they are closer than ever before now too.

Yesterday I saw one out there foraging in the dirt so I loaded up the air shotty and cracked the window. The bird spooked and jumped, but didn't leave the area. This latest batch of birds seems to be less concerned with danger than have previous ones.

I drew down on this bird from only 6 yards away. It had its back turned to me with its head turned sideways so one eye was looking back my way. The front bead on my open sights looks like the size of a volleyball at that close of a range, so it was an easy target. I fired and the bird just layed there and twitched for a minute, then it was over. The damage was substantial. At least one pellet hit its head. One severed its left wing bone at the shoulder joint. And it had a huge bloody hole in its back. I got a head shot and a vital organs body shot all in one. Strike up another confirmed kill for the air shotty.

And yep, the bird was dinner.

Yeah, it's the gamo shadow express, so its the cheaper version of it. If you're thinkin' about getting one then let me ask you a few probing questions...

Do ya' like killin'?

Probing, huh? Did you shoot them with it or throw it at them?

I hit them on the back of the head with the butt of the rifle.

Has that technique improved your kill ratio?

My kill ratio in the last couple months has been almost perfect. I've had like 5 or 6 confirmed kills and only one clean miss.

Roger, how far out can the shotgun reach before you're better off throwing stones at the birds?

I wouldn't shoot at a target past 10 yards to be honest. Much like a real shotgun, the pellets lose energy very quickly. Even if you hit the target past 10 yards, it will likely not do significant damage.

Keep in mind this is a close range gun only.

What kind of a pattern do you get at 10 yards?

They advertise the pattern at 10 yards as being this tight little 12" pattern, with not one but two bullseye hits. But my test on a shoe box (which was 14" wide) showed that at only 7 yards the pattern will spread out even beyond 14 inches in some directions. In addition, the bullseye in the center of the box was not hit with a single shot. Thus demonstrating that a direct hit on your desired target is not guaranteed, despite the large spray of impact points in the vacinity.

Case in point. My last few shots have been excruciatingly frustrating and have resulted in unsuccessful hunts. I am now inclined to discourage the use of these airshotguns for hunting. Because even the maximum kill distance that I once thought this rifle could accomplish, now has diminished. Part of it is that the o-ring on my rifle has also deteriorated. I'm loosing precious fps/fpe with that I'm sure. But even brand new this rifle showed only sparkles of potential, and delivered much less than that.

You could always try putting a rifled, pellet specific barrel
on it.

Always thought one would be good for quail, was going
to bore one of the .22 B11s to take Gamo shot shells.
Sounds like I would be waisting my time.

I think there's a .177 Gamo Viper Skeet or something that doesn't use shot shells. But does have the same type of barrel shroud. Anyway, there could be one or several solutions.

It's not worth using as a regular .22 imo.
