My wife ordered this for me.

I ordered a .22 gun cleaning kit .

3-piece Cleaning Rod
.22 Caliber Jag
.22 Caliber Brush
1/2 ounce RWS Chamber Lube
1 ounce RWS Spring Cylinder Oil
10 each 10-meter distance targets
250 count tin of RWS Superdome Airgun Pellets
25 .22 Caliber Airgun Cleaning Pellets
One 3-inch Lubricant Applicator Needle

also some extra pellets.

What else will I need?

I would also like to know where to go to find basic care and such. I want to know how to make it last and shoot great. I am sure that it will come with instructions but I don't want to tear it up before I read them.

Any other general advice would be welcome too.

The main function of this gun is to kill the squirrels that insist on chewing holes to get into the attic and skunks that the dog likes to harass. I will be shooting a few tin cans too.

Do not use the gun cleaning kit on it!

Airgun Barrels are softer than "firearms" proper- the rifling only has to deal with lead pellets, and a steel or brass rod can damage the rifling in an airgun (as can steel or brass bristles on a brush). You only need to clean an airgun maybe once every few thousand shots (more frequently if using "dirty" pellets with alot of lead residue on them) using a cleaning patch, an aluminum rod or fishing line and oil- no solvents or such.

Beyond that- check the barrel lockup on the Quest is tight (the bolt that holds the barrel assembly to the receiver is sometimes loose- break it in for 500-1000 shots and go from there.

Welcome to the forum! May this be the start of a happy addiction.

I would say the most important thing is to simply shoot the thing. The gun won't be broken in until 800-1000 rounds, and in that time you've got several things to do:

1. Try different kinds of pellets to see what your gun likes. You mentioned three types in your post, so you're on your way.

2. Learn how to shoot a springer. With a big piston and spring flying around inside, there will be recoil and vibration. Hold the gun as lightly as possible (while still maintaining control) and let it rock. This is a little different than a powder burning firearm, but by the time you hit those 800-1000 rounds you will have it figured out.

3. Get to know your gun/pellet combination - find out where it hits at different ranges.

I would not use those little felt cleaning pellets as a "shoot through" cleaning system. You need the resistance of a heavy pellet to put the brakes on the piston - so it doesn't slam into the end of the cylinder. If you're going to shoot those felt things, shoot three or four at the same time. Better to push them through with the rod. And on the same theme, never dry fire the gun (nothing in the barrel).

You really don't need to clean the bore all that often. Since you don't have hot combustion gases eroding the steel in the bore, once every tin of pellets will be fine (500 rounds). Lubricate very sparingly, especially in the piston chamber. Don't use petroleum based bore cleaners (like Hoppe's #9 for powder burners), as they will swell and degrade the seals. You have one seal inside at the end of the piston, and one where you put the pellets in the barrel. Use a non-petroleum degreaser, like 409 or Windex.

Use the oil you've got to wipe down metal surfaces to prevent rust. Treat the stock as you would any nice piece of furniture.

Be safe and have fun. Now get out there and start shooting - but keep us posted on how it goes.

By all means DO NOT use the felt cleaning pellets. They will
round the end of the piston seal which will lower fps and
ruin any consistency the gun has. Shooting it without a pellet
will have the same affect, abet a bit faster.

No gun cleaning kit no dry firing and no cleaning pellets. I can do that. Thanks.

I have never used a scope either I may need some advice on that too. I did find a link on this forum on how to adjust it.

When I was young I had a crosman that had to be pumped up I could shoot sparrows and mice with no scope. But my eyes are older now.

deadeye, that cleaning kit you bought, is it the RWS kit? if it is, i have the same kit, it IS designed for spring air guns... IF you use it, just follow the instructions that came with it and youll be fine.

It is the rws kit. I will have to wait and see about that.

I like the idea of pulling the cloth through with the weed eater line.

We put in the order on Christmas day. It might not get shipped until Monday. I may not get to shoot it till Thursday.

I did find some targets that should come in handy.

I think I will build a pellet trap too.

My wife is going to make some sand bags to help me sight it in.

Also, you might want to clean the barrel before you shoot
it, as they usually are pretty dirty right from the factory.
After that, it probably will not need cleaning for 1000's of
rounds. Airgun barrels foul at a much slower rate than
firearm barrels.
