Quiet hunting

So, as I've mentioned several times before... I live in an urban area. Have to really watch things so I don't have any "legal" issues. I already suspect that one of my nieghbors has seen me taking a squirrel in my yard. Since I've been a bit busy, and to let things settle some, I haven't done any hunting in my yard for a few weeks.

But then today I couldn't resist. Had a dozens pigeons on my garage roof, telephone wires ect. Almost reminded me of the movie "The Birds".

Now I'm sure someone's gonna give me a scientific explanation for this, but it seems to me, since the temps have dropped near me, the sound my rifle seems to be MUCH louder. I'm sure there's some theory that will say something about sound waves and the affects of realative tempuratures. Then of course there's other little things that will affect sound as well. Like the nieghbor directly south of me took all her tropical plants inside for the winter. Nieghbor to the north of me no longer hangs her laundry outside. Goes without saying most of the trees in the area no longer have leaves either.

So, how would you go about doing some silent hunting? As I've already learned here Co2 rifles aren't worth because of issues with temps. Not all that high on the hitting scale anyways. So that leaves springers, break barrels and pcp's.

From posts about the Airforce Condor or the Logun S-16, they can be made very quiet with the addition of a "sound modifier". I don't mind going that route as long as I know I won't be permenatly altering the gun. A local range has an area set-up for .22, I can't see them objecting to me going there with a Condor. But I just as soon avoid any questions about why the end of the barrel is threaded. Not withstanding I don't have the budget now for a Condor.

So that leaves a springer or break barrel. Having never owned either kind, which one would you say has a quieter action to it? Mind you my "stand" is in the attic. I can always back away from the window, cock it, then move forward. (Actually as it gets colder I'ld problaby step into my bedroom which is next to the attic...get warm then go back in attic.) But once fired, which will be louder/quieter?

I do understand that it's not just the action that makes sound. Could have the quietest gun on the planet...but once the projectile speed goes beyond 1108fps you've reached sonic levels and will have that sonic "clap", once the pellet leaves the barrel.

So to keep quiet but still have enough fpe, in .177 caliber, 10g pellet @ 900fps would be something to look for? Once I figure out a solution for my .22 issue, I can go with lower fps, and a 25g or better pellet and still get good fpe at the target? (Hope I worded this paragraph right.)

What rifles would fall under these specs, and still be quiet enough as not to be too noticible when fired?

And while sitting here writing this all out (had to google a few things so I got them right) the mice be playing in my room! I swear that decon make these critters grow/breed faster! Gone through several boxes of the stuff, traps (both sticky and common mouse trap). And there's three of them buggers running around right now! Messed up my 1088 pistol, any suggestions for a mouse hunting pistol????!!!

Thanks

Jax

My quietest "hunting gun" I think would be one of my co2 models (I don't shoot pcp, at least not for a while yet...money Crying or Very sad ). Either my Rabbit Stoper (2260) or the 2240 or the 2250...or the Rws 850 (a bit of over kill for feathered prey).

Nice looking Beeman... I've seen a couple of those scoped. Doesn't cocking it throw the scope off?

That's what I thought when I first put it on, but the POI has
not changed in over 8000 rounds. About 2000 rounds were put
through it by my 11 year old and her friends and they cock it every
which way, including by holding the scope.

It's customary at this point in the festivities for Slavia to chime in and say, "CW is right - it's a great pistol."

CW is right - it's a great pistol.

Did you have to modify it to mount the scope, or will it mount on the pistol factory? I've looked at the Marksman/Beeman several times, but never bought.

So, you'd recommend this as a "mouser"? Is it more accurate then my 1088 was?

My Marksman 2004 is the same gun. Out of the box and with open sights it would group about 1/2" at 10m (from a rest). I put a red dot on mine, and that improved it. Shotgun shells at 25 yards require a steady hand (even from a rest), but it can be done.

It is very quiet - the mechanism "clicking" is the loudest part. It is not a powerful gun, but certainly enough for mice.

It comes with a 3/8" dovetail molded into the top piece.

I'll have to check both of those out then! Gotta do something. Mice are just laughing at the snap traps, and they're breeding at an excellerated rate on the decon poision! I swear if I don't so something, some morning I'm gonna wake up and I won't be able to find our cat!

Hi...I have a Crosman 1760 1.77 700fps co2 its the quitest gun I have.
In the winter I had a small fan heater on its lowest seting going beside where I was shooting
so it was blowing over the gun. Heaps of fps better than I get on a summer day.
A 2260 .22 600fps would be a good bet for a Co2.
Use PBA pellets if you want to up the fps not having a spring & piston
they will not damage the gun.
We are lucky over here as we are able to hang anything on the end
of the barrel.

We can hang anything on our barrels over here, if we
grease the governments palm with a couple of benjimins ($200).
They will even give you a piece of paper stating such.

Even then, I would not display or brandish it that much.

Get a springer and shoot like your a sniper. The thing is, when people hear what sounds like a gunshot, they'll stop and look around. If you shoot a bird, hopefully it will fall to the ground in the time it takes your neighbors to turn and look in the direction the sound came from. If you are not standing there holding your gun then you are ok. As long as they don't see you, your gun, or where you are shooting from then you should be okay.

After hearing that, I am very glad that I don't live in the city.

Roger is only dangerous if you're wearing a bird costume - to my knowledge they only do that in LA.

gamo whisper?? i dont' have one. i have no worries with my nieghbors though. i de-rat my yard with a 440 hunter @850 fps w/7.9 grains. i have a techforce 89 in .22 which creates 20ft/lbs ,even, and the .177 version will do 18lbs, so i've read but it's way louder then the 440. approaching .22 short report. can you shoot from inside your house?

for the power you want you'll get the noise too. i've heard the gamo whispers have a cheapy feel.
sniper.

6 rats in three day for me this week. gamo 440, maccari spring, grt trigger, true glow front sight. crosman pointed 7.9 grain. i can't miss.
