OK folks-
We are using the air gun for backyard plinking. Targets are fine for sighting it in but not as much fun for us to shoot, so we are looking to shoot reactive targets of some kind. We live in a regular "master planned community" type residential neighborhood with close neighbors on each side and 6' cedar privacy fences.
So I was considering setting up something for hanging things like balloons, cans, old CD-Rs, etc. from string or clothespins.
What type of backstop would you recommend I make for this? I have to keep pellets oput of my neighbor's yard. |

It would have to be huge.
I am thinking of a target area maybe 2' off the ground, 4' x 4'.
So the box of sand would have to be about 7 ft. tall and 6 ft wide. |

| I have a 4 foot square plywood back stop, with cut boards on the front. (plywood can cause a low powered shot to glance off). I have 2 sheets of plywood plus the other boards. In front of these I use cardboard boxes stuffed with old mags, phone directories, etc. Then cheap poker chips and clay discs on toothpicks or short squeres...bottle caps, paint balls, small bottles with tempra paints in them... they can be shot hanging, or whatever etc. Lots of possible targets. |

Daisy makes shatter discs... expensive but fun...
If you use cans... use aluminum for the 1077s... it's not powerful enough for tin... Watch out for the little ones... I hear they are sneeky...
You have to have more power to kill the tin cans...

I use old rail road ties... Softer than plywood... less richochets... (SP?) My back side of my property slops up so I keep my targets low to the ground...
I like the paint ball idea Pal... I will have to try that... I am getting tired of the beer bottle caps... I would like to see something splat... |

| The Daisy shatter discs are high, but if there's an "Everythings a Dollar" store near you I have found packs of cheap poker chips there that are fun and the packs are large, espically for a dollar. For that matter take a walk through the store and down the toy isles of these stores. You find lots of interesting targets. |

I have no problems coming up with stuff to shoot at. Mostly I was looking for backstop ideas, backstops bigger than a typical pellet trap.
I am not fond of leaving plywood out in the yard since it's going to destroy itself with wind, rain and sun. Trying to come up with an effective weatherproof idea. |

| for my backyard backstop, i made a 4'x4' frame of 2x4s, to this i stapled and glued 6 layers of canvas both on the front side and back side. in the empty space provided by the frame, i filled it with beer bottle caps. so far, nothing has made it thru, and i have never had any ricochets. i dont know how it would be with a lower powered gun thou (might get bounce backs). when the first few layers of canvas get chewed up, its very easy to replace. |
