So today at work they announced that you must clock out (on your time card) if you are going to leave the premises for any reason. This may seem reasonable, but you must consider that in the last 2 1/2 years I've worked there, it's never been a rule. But now all of a sudden it is.
Well, this didn't really seem to bother anyone except me, because on my breaks I like to walk around the block for excercise and to just "get away" for a while. I get two paid breaks so that's how I usually spend them. But not anymore. They even said that I could clock out to take my breaks, but then I wouldn't get paid for them. WTF?!? So I'd have to take a 6% paycut just to take my normal walks on my breaks. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!
What's worse, is that most people don't care because the only ones who go outside are the smokers, and they stay on the property sucking on their death sticks. It's really sad too because most people put on 15 lbs the first year they work there because all we do all day is sit at a cubicle. Some people even put on 20-30 lbs in a year+ of working there. I've even put on less than ten pounds, but I'm still at my ideal weight (in part because of the walks!) So this new, stupid, arbitrary policy is encouraging obesity and preventing lack of excercise.
The reason they did this you might ask...."insurance purposes". According to one douchebag boss, if we are walking and get hit by a car and on the clock then they are "liable". What's really dumb is that there is probably some law that makes that true. But this is all around a very dumb policy/law. And just when the weather is getting nice out west here, and I can't even go out and enjoy it during my free time. |

What do you do?
I would look for employment elsewhere, if it were me. |

| allow me to play devil's advocate here. at my shop, i have the same policy, and for the same reasons. if you are not on shop business (bike/parts delivery/pickup) and leave the property, then you must clock out. its not really the companies fault. blame the douche bag that got hit by a car and his attorney told him he could sue the company. not what you want to hear, but a perspective from the other side. the policy does suck, i agree, but it is one i fully understand and support... at least until someone somewhere does something about frivolous litigation. |
