CW mentioned this for case hardening:

Quote:
Case (or surface) hardening is easy. Get the part red hot and
immerse in carbon rich paste (I use powered leather in mineral oil).
It works great at infusing carbon (from the leather and oil burning)
into steel's surface. It's great for reworked trigger groups or ones that
are not hardened at the factory

Quote:
Yeah, people have been doing it for years. I remember my Dad
and Grandpa doing it was I was very young. They would brown
a sheet of leather with a kerosene torch untill it was real crispy,
pound it into a powder and then mix it with different oils. It's
definitely something that you want to do outside. It's really good
for direct wear surfaces and making things scratch resistant.
It leaves a pretty cool looking blued finish too.

I had some trouble with the leather part - probably didn't get it "crispy" enough to mash into a paste. I got the stink part right, though.

Instead I mashed up two charcoal briquettes - put them in a pellet tin and used a hammer like a mortar and pestle. It works - I tried it on a hardware store washer. Before treatment I could feel the file's teeth digging in, and afterwards they just skated over the top.

So thanks, CW, for the family recipe.

You can also use ground bone, horses hoofs, or wood charcoal soaked in a solution of sodium carbonate, dried and powdered makes a good hardening compound.

I will be doing a post on hardening and tempering and heat treatment, as soon as I get a bit of time.

Al

I was burning the midnight oil, figuratively and literally.

Something like that, for surface hardening. Probably contains much of what you are making and it's easier than hanging around the furrier all day waiting for hove trimmings.
