Monday 10/22/08 a friend and I decided to go bullfrog/turtle hunting out of a 16' power boat (Belleville Lake Mich)..Now,,,If you have never tried to shoot out of a boat you got a big surprise coming.I took my Super-Modded.20cal. Quest and a "79"Sheridan .20 pumper.I like the .20's because of total power and penetration of the 14.3gr.cylindrical pellets. And both of these rifles are deadly accurate from 10 to 100 feet
First we placed the boat in the middle of a lily-pad filled area in a cove(wind calm, boat traffic calm). The day before we were in the same area with no guns and must have seen 10 large bull frogs and at least 8 10"or larger turtles.
Almost as if they new we brought guns with us on our second trip we didn't see a thing.(Bummer)
But I did manage to kill at least 6 plastic water bottles(after many misses at 10 yards)and a few beer cans floating amongst the lily-pads.But here's the trick! A darn boat don't hold still.Constantly rocking from side to side or fore and aft you have to time your shots(no easy on the trigger here). And a scope makes it even worse! I think the next time we go I'll remove the scope and return to the iron sights. This type of shooting is defiantly a point shoot situation.
We did get a visit from the local lake sheriff who spotted the rifles.
He asked what we were doing and what type of guns we had.I explained we were after bullfrogs and turtles and our guns were air guns.I opened the pump handle on the Sheridan and broke open the breech/barrel on the Quest. He laughed and said "resume and good luck to ya!"But don't hit any water skiers or boaters.About an hour later he returned to see if we scored anything.I told him no but we killed a bunch of cans and water bottles that were littering/floating in the lake.He laughed his butt off and as he was pulling away in his big star on the side Boston Whaler boat he hollered out don't shoot your eye's out guys.
If ya ever get a chance to shoot out of a boat try it.
MAN !,,It has to be the best and hardest challenge I've ever had at trying to hit my target.Or anything far as that goes,,,LOL
Yours Truley

| I used to take my airgun out on a canoe on the river but don't recall aiming being too difficult. Of course, rivers are placid and don't have waves the way lakes do, so maybe that was why. |

I think Bob is living in the future! "Monday 10/22/08 a friend and I decided..."
Did you try shooting any fish? Or maybe that's just a Southern thing. |

As a matter of fact we did try but if you have ever tried shooting into water the de-acceleration and the fact a pellet goes where ever it wants to go I didn't hit any. When boredom set in I was throwing Doritos in the lake just for that purpose.I got a lot of minnows to come around but nothing big.So I tried my luck at just blasting away at the water where there were large schools of the little guys,,,,not one floater,,Geez you would have thought I would have at least hit one.
LOL We Still had fun though.

Bob:
Are there any Petosky (sp?) stones in that area? Found a real nice one near Traverse City a few years back.
Always fun to be had near or on the water!

| Ifin ya wanted to go fish hunting, just gotta go river boating down the Illinois river. Area is over run by Asian Carp. When a boat motors by, they leap out of the water. Locals have taken to shooting them with bows. Lee and Tiffany from the show "Getting Close" did a show on it. |

Amigo,
We were in the water and I did not see any floating rocks.Seriously I think we live to far south for those type of stones anyway.

Hey Bob,
I sure hear you on that one. Who'd a guessed, huh?
I heard about it before. The magazine Scientific American had a long article about the movement-on-water problems some years back, but it pertained to cannon balls and catapults on the old vessels. First they explained the two-axis (three-axis??) rocking AND the potential effects, then drew their conclusion: It's a wonder those old boats ever hit a darned thing! You can understand why the old fighting ships used to pull up almost right next to each other at fairly close distance, broadside, then let 'er rip. It was their only chance.
Now, as I understand it, the modern fighting ships have solved such problems with gyroscopes and other advanced targeting and leveling devices for their guns. Did you have any of that stuff mounted on your Sheridans?? Well, now, there's your problem. You better get to searching the Net for some more-scientific upgrades!
By the way, do frogs make a different sound when they laugh?
Thanks for your nice post. |
