Thanks!
If I'd known I could have gotten this kind of help, I would have bought an air rifle years ago! I've got way too much money tied up in firearms I don't shoot.
I'm off to query the Umarex people.

Got my sight inserts from Umarex today. Maybe the old eyeballs aren't as bad off as I first thought. I've been on the deck plinking at a swinging target I use for my .22 rimfires and not doing too bad.
I need to set up a paper target and get this old gun dialed in. I'll probably still mount a scope in time. The tree rats usually start hanging around when I put out bird seed in cold weather.
I'm going to go with a scope mount base...
http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/accessory.pl?accessory_id=2298
and this scope...
http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/accessory.pl?accessory_id=2404
I haven't decided on rings, I think I need low mount 1" rings but Pyramyd seems to be out of what I need unless I go Beeman and I'm not going that route just yet. I'm going to try the Weaver mounts for stability.
Do 30 mm rings fit 1" scopes?
Any suggestions on rings?
I know this setup is not top shelf but right now I want to get this old 35 shooting and maybe later I can figure out a way to justify buying a new rifle and putting a really nice rifle w/fine optics together.
Thanks, hud |

| I wouldn't try to use 30mm rings on the 1" tube- it'll be all over the place, likely dent the scope tube and generally look like junk. You should be able to find a simple pair of rings for under $10.00 just about anywhere, and you really don't need anything complicated with the rings... |

| Got a Bas Pro Shop or something near by? You can get a Winchester scope and mounts for around $50 off the wrack. Not top of the line but good, Pyramyd has the same scope. |

| Doh! I was going the other way on the rings and somehow thinking the 1" rings were larger than 30mm. I gotta think before I post a bit more too now... |

I didn't think a 30mm ring would tighten up enough to hold a 1"scope securely. Thanks.
I contacted Pyramydair about the scope mount. They said that it by the time I added it I would have enough height and should only need low rings. So that's what I'm looking for.
I guess I could get by with mediums...?
Cliffspot...
Thanks for setting me straight on the AO scope. That old rifle, in it's day, was a blazing ~800~ fps and I'd guess it may have lost a few fps in 40 years. I'll probably keep my shooting to less than 50 yds.
Again,
Thank-you all

I had my order all prepped for Pyramydair and was ready to pull the trigger on it.
Then I saw shipping costs - they want almost $10 to ship a scope and a mount! I'm all for free enterprise but shipping costs really gall me.
If I order this stuff I'll bet the package arrives for less than $4.00 shipping. That means they put the rest in their pocket.
They might as well raise prices on merchandise.
I'll grumble about this for a couple of days but I'll probably "bite the bullet" and order anyway - I usually do

| Yeah, and the worst part is that they don't care if you don't buy the merchandise, nor would they know you were planning on it and only didn't buy it due to their shipping rates, so it's not like you can pull a "I'll show you" on them. The only one you'll be hurting is yourself, because you won't have your rifle. |

| I wouldn't get too upset about the shipping cost- rarely is the value of the item related to the shipping price. If the scope was shipped, uninsured with the USPS via ground service- maybe $5.00 would cover it. They are probably using a courier (UPS or such)- who never charge less than $7-8 even if it's only a envelope with a few sheets of paper inside. |

How do you think I felt. I did a commissioned painting for an acquaintance and told them I'd do the painting and ship it to them for $100 total. I made the mistake of telling the girl at the UPS store that the value of the painting was $200, because it ended up being like $37 to ship it with insurance. Keep in mind that it weighed less than 2 lbs and I already had it boxed up. I had it in a computer flatscreen monitor box.
So I ended up painting this thing for hours and hours, and then boxed it and had it shipped, and only made $63!!!
Being an artist sucks sometimes. I'd be a starving one were it not for the doves I shoot and eat. |

| My wife is an atrist (I use the oresent tense even though she is at this time bed fast and unable to paint, but I hope that won't be permenant). I don't think she ever really got anything like what she deserved for her work. She was too soft hearted and a soft touch. She even did a mural on the wall of a retirement high rise once because the lady asked her. Really all she got out of that was some paint they bought, very little money. I can sympathize. Hopefully the game stays plentiful, keep painting. I know my wife always loved the work and misses it terribly now. |

You're right, but I still like to complain about it anyway.
I'll get around to ordering it soon. I'm getting tired of shooting those iron sights.

in regards to proprietors over charging for the shipping costs........
allow me to preface my rebuttal .... i own my own small business, i have a customer base that ranges from coast to coast, 70% of my business is classified as "mail order".
shipping costs are shipping costs... the company selling you the product does not set these prices... the shipper does. and PLEASE read the fine print... almost all of the time you are not only paying shipping, but "handling" as well. shipping is what happens AFTER it leaves the store. handling is everything from order processing to packaging. you dont pay these charges at "wally-world" because you do these things yourself, ie.. you dont give a list to a clerk and have him pull and process the order.
sorry but it burns my a$$ when i hear that everyone thinks businesses are out to "gouge" people.... we like to eat too!!! you wouldnt work for free would you? should the person that pulls and packages your order do it for free? or should the owner of the business "eat" the cost of paying him?
i'll step off my high horse now.... hope i didnt piss anyone off too much [which seems to be my nature (ask my wife)]

I have friends that own small shops and have helped out enough to know that when "customers" want 'free shipping', they're typically so 'cheap minded' that it's easier to just send them to a 'big box' outlet, rather than wasting time being 'nickeled & dimed' to death.
The customer may be "right" because "it's their money", but that doesn't mean they'll understand how much more small shops pay due to the difference in 'bulk orders' vs 'single item order' price differences.
Wallyswurld don't pay what mom-n-pop shop pays for the same item, but mom-n-pop don't have resourses to buy entire warehouses full of product the way Wallyswurld can . . . |
