I am planning on buying my first bb/pellet rifle and I have a few questions first. I have been primarily looking at 2 rifles. 1 being the Crosman Pumpmaster 760, which I guess is known as being a good starter rifle. Oh ya, by the way, I don't want to spend over $100 on the the rifle alone. So I guess I am looking for a "budget" rifle. After researching the 760 for a while, I started thinking I might want a slightly more powerful gun. So the second gun I looked at is the Crosman Classic 2100 (model # 2100b). Are either of these guns good, or at least good enough for a beginner? Would you suggest the 2100b or do you think the 760 is good enough even though it is less powerful?

The other thing is that I would like to get an inexpensive scope for the rifle I get. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good but "cheap" scope. I was looking at the CenterPoint AR22 Series 4x32mm duplex reticle scope and the Winchester 4x32 scope. Are either of these ok or at least good enough for a beginner?

By the way I am going to be just shooting at targets, no hunting or anything.

Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks!

If you want to go "cheap" and not get a piece of crap- avoid anything that shoots BB's- they are less accurate.

Try a Crosman Quest, Phantom or 2260- all of which can be had for less than $100.00

What is the primary purpose for the rifle- target shooting? Hunting?

So you are saying that shoot bb's sucks? and that only pellets are accurate? Because I was planning on mostly shooting bb's.

As I said it will primarily be target shooting and plinking.

Any thoughts on a scope?

Anyone else have an opinion

The two big differences between the 760 and 2100 are the type of barrel and the size. The 760 is very small, sized for grade school through junior high shooters. The 2100 is more adult sized. The 760 has a smoothbore barrel, and the 2100 is rifled (spiral grooves on the inside that spin the pellet for more accuracy). I would forget BB's altogether - they're not very accurate, and you'll just get frustrated. If you get a rifled barrel, shooting hard steel BB's will damage the rifling.

Both guns are multi-stroke pneumatics, which means you will spend all your time pumping. You might want to search for closeout deals on barrel-cocking spring guns (that cock with one motion). Or expand your price range to about $130, where you will have more options. The Daisy 953 is another gun to consider in the sub-$100 region; it is a single-stroke pneumatic.

Do you have your heart set on a long gun? If you just want to do target shooting, a pistol might do. Check out the Beeman P17/Marksman 2004 (same gun). Two of us on this forum have them, and we're happy with them. Not very powerful, but very accurate. And only about $50.

The only thing I have against pellets is that they are made of lead. But I guess lead isn't that dangerous. Do you usually wash your hands after every use of pellets, like the warnings say?

Anyone know anything about the dangers of LEAD pellets?

Thanks

Hi all... A BB is inaccrate as a spinning sphere moving a speed though air or water
has pos & neg forces acting on oppisite sides. "Hop up" BB guns use this effect to make the BB rise for extra distance, tennis players put a top spin on the ball to make it drop "same effect" Bend it like Beccum! He mite not realize it but he uses the MAGNUS EFFECT to curve the ball.
If you do get a BB gun get one that is not rifled as rifling will help make the BB spin

No.. These forces are very strong in the 1920s they built a passinger liner powered by 2 Flettner rotors witch use the Magnus Effect as a means of power.

Wow...

bbs are steel, they are smaller than .177 (even though some guns shoot both). The steel of the bbs is too hard it will not be effected by the rifling, though it may well damage the rifling.

We've all been shooting lead pellets for generations now. Yes wash your hands, but the "dread" of the awful lead ammo is a gift from our politically correct critics.

You can get a Crosman Quest or Phantom with scope included for under $120. These are springers and more powerful than the guns you mentioned. While the scopes and guns are not "top of the line" they are perfectly serviceable and fit into your price (if you get the rifles unscoped they will be less than the $100.

Depending on how you feel about co2, there are several good choices for a beginner there at a reasonable price. Are you planningon simple back yard plinking or do you plan to take game, this will effect your choice.

Hope this helped. With more details about your plans we could probably give you better advice.

Good shooting.

I will be backyard target shooting and plinking.

If you're just target shooting in the backyard, then you can build a pellet trap to catch all your lead. Such a trap can be built from a cardboard box and newspaper.

Washing your hands will take care of the rest.

I use cardboard boxes stuffed with ild mags, old phone directories, catalogs, whatever. Since you aren't planning toi go after animals take a look at the Crosman 1077. It's a little co2 rifle, it's double action so the trigger pull is stiffer than some guns, but I find it accurate enough and it's under $70.

If you want something more accurate but not a multipump, The other Crosman co2s are good as are some of the single pump models from daisy. These are all low power and can be found as budget models.

And, as I noted before, the springers I mentioned in my last post are also fairly inexpensive and will give you more selection as to what you do with your rifle.
