I shot a pellet yesterday and I actually saw it for a fleeting second. I was shooting less than 800 fps. What is the minimum fps before you can see your pellets in flight? Has anyone ever seen their pellets in flight?

Yes Sir, I see them alot not every time but quite a bit, out of all my airguns.
On a very rare occasion I can catch a bullet in the spotting scope from powder guns, just depends on the light conditions.

I think it has to do with how you move your eyes. I've noticed that if I rotate my head and move my eyes in a circular pattern, then I can fix my eyes on my overhead fan blades. If I just stare upwards they are blurred, but if I move my eyes around then I can catch a glimpse of the individual blades.

So if your eyes dart out in the direction of the bullet, for a fraction of a moment you can sometimes see the pellet in motion.

I've seen bullets in the air from a .38 special and a .45 Auto. If the sun is to your back and your target is bright like a big piece of paper it's not hard to see the bullets.

I regularly see .22LR bullets. This is through a scope, concentrating on a dark patch of a 100 yard target berm, and with the sun diagonal behind me.

I notice it all of the time, especially as stated, with the illumination
coming behind.

I also see it a lot if I'm inside assigning a target
with the laser designator. For a brief moment the laser reflects
off of the back of the pellet. Some times it is so brite that it is
obnoxiuos.

I have even seen it out in the woods with my HK .308 deer rifle
in the evening, with the sun going down behind me.

I see pellet's in flight all the time, especially on the higher scope setting's,and when I'm shooting H&N RundKugeln's I really see them on a sunny day due to their colour, and it doesn't really matter which gun(High/Low Power) I'm useing. It's cool, you really see where the round crosses your line of sight twice. Andy

I see the pellets at times also. I think its got to do with the lighting as said, maybe a slight strobe effect somehow affecting the pellet. Its cool though when there seen.

I do occasionally see pellets in flight and I think it is due to trying to focus on the sight and target at the same time, and in fact you focus on the middle distance and as the pellet passes through this focus point you eye picks it up and follows it to the target.

Guys! You're not supposed to see the pellet fly! You are supposed to be focused on the front sight. Now, repeat after me, front sight, front sight front sight, front,... Shocked

Yes, I sometimes see the pellet fly. It is cool, but it means my focus was in the wrong place for open sights. I wear +1.25 reading glasses to force the front sight into clear focus and prevent myself from focusing on the target. Smile

What's wierd is that your brain can't interpret things for that brief of an interval. So its kind of like subliminal advertising where you get a flash of an image and you think "Did I just see that?"

It'd be cool if they put some sort of reflective surface in or on the skirts of pellets so if you shot with the sun to your back you could see them like tracer rounds.

Try shooting H&N RundKugeln's (the copper coated one's, not the Graphiteized ones).
