Alstone - here's another gadget that might interest you.

The mount is a scope ring that I got on closeout at the end of the hunting season ($4.00 U.S. for the pair). The spirit level came from a cheap plastic torpedo level ($3.00 with three vials). The vial is held in place with black epoxy, and the metal is colored with automotive "touch-up" lacquer.

This makes a difference at ranges beyond 25 yards; up close not so much. I calibrated it by checking the vertical cross hair against a distant plumb line. The truth is it doesn't have to be perfectly calibrated. The purpose is not to prevent cant, but to hold the same position shot-to-shot.

I've been thinking about a level for a while now, 23ib0d0n and Mar advised me to get one a while back when I was having problems when changing the poi.
The cost in the UK is about $45.00, but thinking about it I have a plastic level and an old pair of mounts, I could chop one of them up and mount the level in the side of one of the mounts.
I'll have a look at that and if it turns out ok I'll post a photo, I've been looking for a new project to keep me busy. Thumb Up!

More of the same theme. The level on the Marksman 2004 is the same cheap vial held by a scrap of aluminium. (Did I get the metal right?) The Slavia has a "see-through" mount, which lets me see the vial without disturbing my cheek weld.

The other thing on the Slavia is a blinder holder. It is another use for scope rings, only turned sideways. I know you're supposed to keep both eyes open, but I find it difficult. The holder is a scrap of metal with a large paper clip. The blinder is cut from an antifreeze jug, with ballistics information on the far side. My brother says white is better, but I've had better luck with black. The white blinder came from a milk jug.

The labels are computer print-outs with clear tape on top and double-faced tape below. Cut the whole "sandwich" with scissors and stick it on. After about a year the paper fibers will separate, but if you thought to save the document, it will only take a few seconds to replace. Same for changes in ammunition or gun mods. On other guns I have the numbers under the flip-up scope caps.

Alstone - should you do this, don't be a slave to the level. Center the bubble, take a quick note of the reticle's orientation, and incorporate that into your mental visualization of the "desired" sight picture.

Shooting from a bench with an adjustable bipod is easy. Adjust the bipod to center the bubble and then forget it.

I concur. I find that for me, it makes a difference after 50 yards.
100 yards and beyond and it can make a huge differnce.

One thing that was not mentioned was that to be correctly installed
and to be most effective, first you have to level the guns action.
Then level the reticle and finally the gun level should be leveled to
the action and reticle. Without the guns action being leveled first
all the other leveling would be a moot exercise.

On a side not. Slavia, how do like that Marksman pistol?
I have a Beeman P17 which is the same gun.
I just still cannot believe the quallity and accuracy of it
for the price that I paid. What scope does yours wear?

A agree with the stuff about leveling the action and the scope. This is so that the pellet's up-and-down movement is parallel to the vertical crosshair. That way altitude adjustments don't influence azimuth adjustments, and vice versa. cw - any suggestions on how to accomplish that without buying stock in Bausch & Lomb?

Regarding the Marksman 2004 - see the thread you started on the P17. I'm down towards the bottom.

Yea regarding the spirit level, When I bought my TX I was having trouble with the windage having to be adjusted each time I changed the range, and a spirit level was suggested, but now I have got used to the gun I find I can shoot out from 10-40m with out any problem, which is the maximum spread I need.

As for the spirit level I will have a go at cobbling one together just for something to do. A guy down at the local club has a electronic level that turns on a red or green led under the scope eyepiece if the gun is not level, a neat piece of kit but a bit over the top.

I think a plumb bob is good enuf to do the same thing as long as the rifle is also plumb.

Once you have the scope leveled... I like to have mine just below the eye piece for a quick look see.

I used NC-MT-RB19 NcSTAR Scope Rings - 1"" Ring-38"" Dovetail-high See Thru RB19 $4.00 from Opticsplanet and a cheap $2.00 plastic level to donate the vial to the cause. Total Cost... $6.00

I did not paint the aluminum after drilling so that light would reflect like a fiber optic sight to luminate the vial.

So does that mean I won on style points... WooHoo!

The vial fit just perfect in the mount. Nice & flush with the sides. Insted of gluing... I removed the thumb screw and took a center punch and just gave it a little love tap against the metal to crimp the vial in place. Trust me... it ain't coming back out unless I drill it out...
